In the heart of the Nebrodi Mountains, over 500 meters above sea level and overlooking the Gulf of Patti, the medieval village of Basicò (province of Messina, Sicily) hosts its most heartfelt event in the second half of August: the Feast of Maria Santissima di Basicò, the town's patron saint. The sacred image of the Madonna is kept in the Mother Church of San Francesco d'Assisi, a 17th-century building overlooking Corso Vittorio Emanuele at the entrance to the village, which houses valuable paintings of the Sicilian school.
The feast represents the cornerstone of the religious and popular identity of the Basicò community. For the many emigrants who return to their native village during these days, August 21st is an occasion to reconnect with their roots, where faith intertwines with the traditions and conviviality of the village. The celebration is preceded by a novena of preparation, with daily rosary and evening mass, guiding the faithful toward the solemnity.
The patronal day opens at dawn with festive bell ringing announcing the start of the celebrations, followed by the dawn mass. The day unfolds through solemn liturgical celebrations and musical moments, with the local band marching through the town streets. At sunset, after the solemn mass, the evocative fercolo with the statue of the Madonna is carried on shoulders in a procession along the streets of the historic center, accompanied by the devotion of the faithful. The feast culminates at midnight with a fireworks display that illuminates the Nebrodi sky.
Linked to the religious festivities in the preceding days is the Provola Basicotana Festival, which celebrates the local signature cheese: a string-cheese provola with a characteristic pear shape, particularly appreciated in the version with verdello lemon for its citrusy notes. The festival features tastings of provola with local bread and wine, folk dances, and the folkloric parade of Sicilian carts through the streets of the village, accompanied by traditional songs and sounds.
Participating in the Feast of Maria Santissima di Basicò means discovering the most genuine inland Sicily, far from mass tourism routes: a stone village, the warmth of the people, the flavors of Nebrodi cuisine, and a popular devotion passed down from generation to generation.
