Wildflower carpets and nocturnal illuminations in the heart of the Nebrodi mountains
The Braidi Flower Festival, also known as Braidi in Fiore, is one of the most captivating events in inland Sicily. It takes place in the small hamlet of Braidi, within the municipality of Montalbano Elicona (Province of Messina), nestled in the heart of the Nebrodi Park. For the occasion, the village streets, particularly the central Via Messina, are covered by a grand floral carpet entirely handmade by the local residents.
The event's unique hallmark is the exclusive use of wild flora hand-picked from the surrounding fields and hills: broom, yarrow, viper's bugloss, giant fennel, mallow, hollyhock, wild pea, and mugwort. Their natural, inimitable, and ever-changing hues bring to life designs that often depict sacred images. The placement of the petals is entrusted to the master floral artists of Braidi, who work for hours following a tradition passed down through generations.
The most evocative moment arrives at sunset with the Luminaria Notturna: over a thousand candles illuminate the floral carpets, creating artistic and original light displays that accompany the path and provide an atmosphere of profound spirituality. The spectacle concludes late in the evening with the light shows of pyrotechnic fountains.
Founded in 1996 by a group of young people, the Braidi Flower Festival is now an unmissable event that defines the local identity, actively involving most of the inhabitants, from children to the elderly. The event is organized by the Pro Loco Braidi with the support of the Municipality of Montalbano Elicona and the patronage of regional tourism, sports, and entertainment bodies. For those visiting Sicily, it is the perfect opportunity to discover an authentic village and a collective ritual that unites floral art, faith, and community.
The hamlet of Braidi is part of Montalbano Elicona, one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, dominated by its medieval castle and located near the megalithic site of Argimusco and the Malabotta Forest. A visit to the Flower Festival is easily combined with the discovery of this fascinating corner of the province of Messina.
The 26th Braidi Flower Festival will be held on June 27-28, 2026, in the hamlet of Braidi, Montalbano Elicona (ME). Saturday, June 27, at 6:00 PM, marks the official start of the work and the inauguration of the mural, followed by the opening of food stands and the preparation of the floral carpet base accompanied by piano bar music. Sunday, June 28, the actual petal placement, entrusted to the master floral artists, begins in the early afternoon: the day is packed with religious moments, the traditional vintage car parade, good music, and traditional flavors. The event concludes late in the evening with the light shows of pyrotechnic fountains illuminating the floral carpet.
New for the 2026 edition: street artist Andrea Sposari will create a permanent work dedicated to the event, an artistic tribute intended to enhance the small Nebrodi center over time.
Montalbano Elicona can be reached by car from the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway (exit Falcone-Montagnareale or Patti), continuing towards the interior of the Nebrodi mountains. The hamlet of Braidi is located along the provincial roads south of the town center.
The event is held at the end of June. Admission is free. It is recommended to arrive in the late afternoon to witness the laying of the petals and stay until the evening Night Illumination.
During the event, food stands featuring local products are available. Comfortable shoes are recommended for walking through the village streets.
