The Nebrodi caciocavallo festival in the heart of Basicò
The Sagra della Provola Basicotana is a historic fixture of the Sicilian summer calendar. Established in 1972, it is considered one of the island's oldest food festivals. It takes place in Basicò, a small village in the Nebrodi Mountains in the province of Messina, drawing visitors from across Sicily every year to celebrate the region's signature product: the provola basicotana.
The undisputed star of the festival is the Nebrodi provola, a stretched-curd caciocavallo cheese recognized as a Slow Food Presidium, crafted by cheesemakers using techniques passed down through generations. It is instantly recognizable by its unmistakable pear shape with a ball-shaped head and its long aging process. In the eastern Nebrodi area, where Basicò is located, these cheeses can reach impressive sizes. A particularly prized variety includes a verdello lemon inside, which infuses the cheese with delicate citrus aromas.
The heart of the festival is the tasting: throughout the village streets and squares, visitors can purchase packages featuring provola, homemade bread, and local wines, accompanied by traditional sausages and cured meats. The streets of Basicò come alive with a parade of Sicilian carts, a symbol of the island's folklore, while folk groups, flag-wavers, and orchestras provide entertainment with traditional dances and live music. Demonstrations of the cheesemaking process are often held, offering visitors a glimpse into the artisanal expertise behind the product.
The festival is part of the celebrations in honor of the Madonna of Basicò, the village's patron saint, which culminate on August 21st with a solemn procession of the statue through the town streets. This blend of religious devotion and culinary tradition makes mid-August the most vibrant and heartfelt time of the year for the local community.
Visiting the Sagra della Provola Basicotana is also the perfect opportunity to explore Basicò and the stunning landscapes of the Nebrodi, characterized by mountains, forests, and enduring pastoral traditions. It is an authentic experience that marries quality gastronomy, popular devotion, and Sicilian identity in the heart of the province of Messina.
The Sagra della Provola Basicotana will be held on August 19, 2026, in Basicò (Messina), during the festivities honoring the Madonna of Basicò. The event will maintain its traditional format: tasting of the Slow Food Presidium stretched-curd caciocavallo, distribution of packages with provola, bread, and wine in Piazza Santa Maria, a folk parade of Sicilian carts, and an evening of music and popular dances. The complete program, including times, musical guests, and flag-waving groups, will be published by Pro Loco Basicò closer to the event.
Basicò is located in the Nebrodi Mountains, in the hinterland of the province of Messina. By car, it can be reached via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway (exits along the Tyrrhenian coast), continuing inland along provincial roads. The most convenient train station is Tindari-Patti on the Tyrrhenian line, from where you can continue by car.
The festival is held on August 19th, as part of the celebrations for the Madonna of Basicò (which run until August 21st). Activities typically begin in the late afternoon in Piazza Santa Maria.
Admission to the festival is free. Tastings of provola, bread, and wine are available by purchasing tickets at the stands set up throughout the village.
