The timed ultramarathon in the green heart of the Villa Comunale
The 6-8 Hours of Chieti is one of the most popular timed ultramarathon events in Abruzzo. It takes place in the Municipality of Chieti, the capital of the province, within the charming Villa Comunale overlooking Piazza Mazzini, the green lung of the upper city. A paved loop of approximately 1,033 meters, with an elevation gain of just 22 meters and completely closed to traffic, is set up for athletes to run repeatedly for the duration of the race.
Unlike classic marathons, the 6-8 Hours does not measure the time taken to complete a fixed distance, but rather the distance covered within a set time. Each runner chooses their own challenge:
Both races conclude together at 4:00 PM, with a shared finish that provides one of the most exciting moments of the day. The winner is the person who completes the highest number of laps. It is a discipline of pure endurance, requiring energy management, mental focus, and a steady pace.
The event, also known by its official name 6/8 Hours City of Teate, is organized by the Marathon Club Manoppello Sogeda in collaboration with AVIS Comunale Chieti and supported by the local municipal administration. The race is included in the Gran Prix IUTA (Italian Ultramarathon and Trail Association) calendar and is valid for the Ultra Abruzzo Road and Trail Championship, as well as being held under the aegis of UISP – Athletics Abruzzo and Molise.
At the end of the two races, the top three overall athletes and the best in each category are awarded, while all finishers receive a medal. The partnership with AVIS also gives the day a strong sense of solidarity, promoting blood donation and a culture of sportsmanship.
Running in Chieti means immersing yourself in one of Italy's oldest cities, rich in archaeological sites and overlooking the Abruzzo hills with the Maiella mountains in the background. The Villa Comunale, with its tree-lined avenues and sculptures, offers a shaded and protected setting, ideal for such a long and demanding test. It is an event that combines physical effort, community, and a love for the Abruzzo region.
The fifth edition of the 6-8 Hours of Chieti took place on Sunday, June 7, 2026, at the Villa Comunale in Piazza Mazzini, on a 1,033-meter paved circuit completely closed to traffic. The 8-hour race started at 8:00 AM, the 6-hour race at 10:00 AM, with a joint finish at 4:00 PM.
The race, organized by the Marathon Club Manoppello Sogeda with AVIS Comunale Chieti, was valid for the 24th Gran Prix IUTA 2026 and the 3rd Ultra Abruzzo Road and Trail Championship. In the overall standings, Andrea D'Agostino (Atletica Val Tavo) won the 8-hour race with 81 laps, and Giulia Tossici (Porto San Giorgio Runners) with 78 laps; in the 6-hour race, Antonello Pattara and Chiara Zurli took the top spots.
