The Gargano endurance race that stops at the stroke of midnight
In the town of Cagnano Varano, overlooking its namesake lake and nestled in the Gargano promontory in the province of Foggia, one of the most distinctive endurance tests in Apulian running takes place every summer: the "Stop at Midnight", officially known as the 6-8 Hours of Cagnano Varano. This is no ordinary race: it is not just about speed, but about the ability to endure for hours on a city loop, running tirelessly until the stroke of midnight, from which the event takes its name.
The event is held on a city circuit of approximately 1 km, with the meeting point and start line in Piazza Giannone. The range of distances is broad, designed for both ultramarathoners and those looking to test themselves on shorter distances: 10 km, 21 km, marathon (42.195 km), 50 km, and the two timed events of 6 and 8 hours. Intermediate finish lines at the 10, 21, 42.195, and 50 km marks allow for multiple rankings within the same timed race.
The 6 and 8-hour races are valid for the IUTA Ultramarathon Grand Prix, the national circuit that brings together Italy's premier endurance races, and in the past, they have also been part of the Central-South Regional Criterium. This inclusion in federal calendars makes Cagnano Varano a highly anticipated stop for long-distance specialists, who travel here from many regions to accumulate kilometers and ranking points.
The event is organized by ASD Stracagnano in collaboration with the Santa Maria della Pietà Parish, with the patronage and co-organization of the Municipality of Cagnano Varano. It is the result of local volunteer efforts that, since the first edition in 2015, have brought an ultramarathon race to a small town in the Gargano, involving the entire community.
The charm of the "Stop at Midnight" lies entirely in its evening atmosphere: the afternoon start allows athletes to run during the cooler hours, when the Apulian summer heat gives way to the breeze from Lake Varano. As the evening progresses, the circuit comes alive with cheering, refreshment points, and music, while athletes continue to clock laps under the watchful eyes of the locals. A blend of sport, endurance, and a town festival that makes this race a defining event for Cagnano Varano and the Gargano region.
The seventh edition of the 6-8 Hours of Cagnano Varano took place on Saturday, June 20, 2026, confirming the well-established formula of the Gargano endurance race. On the city circuit of approximately 1 km around Piazza Giannone, athletes competed in the 6 and 8-hour timed events and fixed distances (10 km, 21 km, marathon, 50 km), with the long-distance events included in the IUTA Ultramarathon Grand Prix. The race, organized by ASD Stracagnano with the Santa Maria della Pietà Parish and the Municipality of Cagnano Varano, attracted runners from all over Apulia and other regions.
The races are held on a city circuit of approximately 1 km. Intermediate finish lines are provided at the 10, 21, 42.195, and 50 km marks, allowing for separate rankings for the 10 km, half-marathon, marathon, and 50 km within the timed events.
The 6 and 8-hour races are valid for the 24th IUTA 2026 Ultramarathon Grand Prix. Registration deadline: June 18, 2026.
In the 6-hour race, SM45 category, Vincenzo Di Molfetta (Bisceglie Running) took the win with 56.707 km covered in 56 laps, ahead of Francesco Di Pierro (50.103 km) and Paolo Cardillo (42 km), all representing Bisceglie Running, the club that starred in this edition with four athletes on the podium in their respective categories.
Meeting point, start, and finish in Piazza Giannone, in the center of Cagnano Varano (FG), on the Gargano overlooking Lake Varano.
