Southern Italian folk music at the foot of the Castle of Gesualdo, in Irpinia
Every late August, the village of Gesualdo, in the province of Avellino, becomes one of Irpinia's capitals of folk music. The Gesualdo Folk Event is a festival dedicated to the sounds of Southern Italy, held in Piazza Neviera, the square dominated by the imposing ramparts of the medieval castle. Two evenings of concerts, dancing, tammorre, and DJ sets draw crowds from all over Campania and neighboring regions, in a format that blends live performance, tradition, and community spirit.
The event was born in 2004 through the initiative of the youth association New Generation and has grown edition after edition, eventually coming under the management of the Pro Loco "Civitatis Iesualdinae", which transformed it into a true festival with a recognizable identity. In 2025, the Gesualdo Folk Event celebrated its twentieth edition: a milestone that the Pro Loco president, Luigi Petruzzo, summarized as "twenty years of music, dance, culture, and community." From a local gathering, the festival has become one of the most followed folk events in Irpinia.
It is the setting that makes the event instantly recognizable. Piazza Neviera opens up right below the Castle of Gesualdo, a fortress of Norman origin remodeled into a Renaissance residence, and its illuminated silhouette serves as a natural backdrop to the stage. During those evenings, the historic center, with its stone alleys winding up toward the fortress, is filled with a continuous flow of visitors: some arriving for the concert, others for a stroll among the stalls, and some simply to reconnect with friends and relatives back in town for the August holidays.
The hallmark of the festival is its constant search for musical fusion. Alongside the popular repertoire of the South—tammurriate, pizziche, traditional songs, battente guitars, and percussion—the lineup has hosted forays into hip hop, alternative rock, and electronic music over the years. Artists such as Eugenio Bennato, Rocco Hunt, Articolo 31, Bandabardò, and Livio Cori have performed on the Piazza Neviera stage, alongside local Irpinian folk groups, regional dance schools, and DJ sets that keep the square alive until late at night.
The Gesualdo Folk Event is about more than just music: for years, the evenings have been accompanied by a food and wine area featuring beer tastings, including craft labels, and zero-kilometer street food stalls offering typical Irpinian products. It is a way to showcase local production from a territory known primarily for its wines—Taurasi, Fiano di Avellino, and Greco di Tufo are produced just a few kilometers away—and to encourage visitors to stay well beyond the concert hours.
Visiting Gesualdo during the festival also means discovering a village that was the birthplace of an extraordinary musical story: Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa, one of the most daring madrigalists of the late Renaissance, lived here, and his name remains tied to the castle that dominates the town. The village is part of the "Borghi più Belli d'Italia" (Most Beautiful Villages in Italy) circuit and is located in Alta Irpinia, in a hilly area of inland Campania characterized by vineyards, olive groves, and small historic centers, far from the mass tourism routes of the coast.
The festival is traditionally held in the last ten days of August, when the summer calendar of the Municipality of Gesualdo is at its busiest, intertwining with other patronal feasts and musical events of the Gesualdo summer. The evenings begin after dinner and continue for a long time: it is advisable to arrive early to secure a spot in the square, bring something light to wear—at night, at these altitudes in the Campanian Apennines, the temperature drops—and expect a bit of a queue at the stalls during peak times.
The dates for the 2026 edition are set for Tuesday, August 25, and Wednesday, August 26, in the usual setting of Piazza Neviera, under the ramparts of the Castle of Gesualdo. The festival, organized by the Pro Loco Civitatis Iesualdinae, maintains the formula that has ensured its success: concerts of Southern Italian folk music, moments of traditional dance, and DJ sets that liven up the square until late at night.
As every year, the musical evenings are complemented by an area dedicated to beer and food stalls featuring typical Irpinian products, transforming the historic center of the Municipality of Gesualdo into a journey of taste as well as music. The event is part of the busy calendar of the Gesualdo summer, amidst patronal feasts and musical appointments that accompany the entire month of August in this corner of inland Campania.
The detailed artistic lineup is traditionally released by the Pro Loco in the weeks leading up to the event via the official website and social media channels. Those wishing to attend the concerts should arrive well in advance: in recent editions, Piazza Neviera has filled up well before the start of the performances.
The evenings are held in Piazza Neviera, at the foot of the Castle of Gesualdo, in the historic center of the Municipality of Gesualdo (AV), in Alta Irpinia. Gastronomic stalls and markets occupy the surrounding streets.
By car: the nearest motorway exit is Grottaminarda, on the A16 Naples-Canosa, about ten kilometers from the village; from there, continue on the provincial roads to Gesualdo. By train and bus: the reference stations are Avellino and Benevento, connected to the village by regional bus lines. On festival evenings, the historic center is closed to traffic: you can park in the external areas and reach the square on foot.
The event location is indicated as accessible to people with disabilities.
Accommodation in Gesualdo is limited to a few facilities: those arriving from afar will find more options among bed & breakfasts and farmhouses in neighboring Irpinian towns, such as Grottaminarda, Ariano Irpino, Frigento, and the Taurasi area.
