An evening of youth music in Piazza Dante, between Italy and Europe
The Youth Orchestras Festival is one of the most cherished events in the calendar of Quattro Castella, a municipality in the province of Reggio Emilia famous for its Matildic hills and the castles that dominate the landscape. Every year, between late May and early June, the central Piazza Dante fills with music stands, instruments, and hundreds of young men and women who share the same passion: making music together.
The event is organized by the association APS Futuro in Musica, a local organization founded to promote musical education for young people and to provide a real stage for the orchestras and ensembles that animate schools, conservatories, and bands in the area. Over the years, a European-scale event has been built around this core.
The distinctive feature of the Festival is its international dimension: alongside the Emilian ensembles, groups from Weilburg, Germany, Quattro Castella's twin city, perform. The musical twinning brings German orchestras and choirs to the square, alternating with Italian groups, creating an evening of exchange, mutual understanding, and friendship between young musicians from different countries.
The repertoire is deliberately eclectic and designed for a wide audience: it ranges from jazz to classical music, from famous film soundtracks to Italian singer-songwriter music, up to the great hits of international rock. It is a formula that values many hours of practice and, at the same time, knows how to engage families, enthusiasts, and the simply curious.
The Youth Orchestras Festival is much more than a concert: it is an opportunity for the community of Quattro Castella to come together, for young instrumentalists to test themselves in front of a real audience, and for Reggio Emilia to showcase the vitality of its grassroots music scene.
The 2026 edition of the Youth Orchestras Festival was held on Saturday, May 30, 2026, from 7:30 PM to 11:00 PM, in Piazza Dante in Quattro Castella, continuing the tradition of bringing together young Italian and European musicians. This year again, the event renewed its bond with the twin city of Weilburg, Germany, from which two ensembles arrived.
The program ranged from jazz to classical music, from film soundtracks to Italian singer-songwriter music, and to the great hits of international rock. The evening, with free admission, was accompanied by refreshment stands set up in the square.
