Castelnuovo Don Bosco becomes the village of wine, celebrating Freisa and Malvasia
In the heart of the Monferrato hills, bordering the Turin area, the town of Castelnuovo Don Bosco (Asti province, Piedmont) dedicates an entire day to wine and the oenological excellence of its territory. For one day, the town literally transforms into the village of wine: the streets and squares of the historic center host tasting stalls, producers, and enthusiasts in a festive atmosphere that inaugurates the summer season.
Castelnuovo Don Bosco is one of the most recognizable names in Piedmontese oenology thanks to the Malvasia di Castelnuovo Don Bosco DOC, a sweet, semi-sparkling or sparkling red wine with a characteristic bouquet of wild rose and red fruits, obtained from the Malvasia di Schierano and Malvasia Nera Lunga grape varieties, with the possible addition of Freisa. Freisa itself is the other iconic grape variety of these hills, which, together with Malvasia, makes the village a small capital of aromatic wine. The production area encompasses the territories of Castelnuovo Don Bosco, Albugnano, Passerano Marmorito, Pino d'Asti, Berzano San Pietro, and Moncucco Torinese.
The heart of the festival lies in the tasting stalls run by local wineries, which offer their labels for sampling. With a tasting glass in hand, visitors can discover the different interpretations of Malvasia and Freisa directly from the producers, in a journey that combines wine education with the pleasure of village conviviality.
The Wine Festival is part of a rich calendar of events that animate Castelnuovo Don Bosco throughout the summer: the festival is followed by the traditional Corsa delle Botti (Barrel Race), a challenge between the town's districts where barrels are rolled along the streets of the center. In the following months, the area also celebrates the truffle with the Regional Truffle Fair and the Sant'Andrea Fair. The Wine Festival is organized by the Associazione Sviluppo di Castelnuovo Don Bosco in collaboration with local wineries, serving as an ideal showcase to discover the viticultural identity of this corner of Piedmont.
The 2026 Wine Festival of Castelnuovo Don Bosco will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2026. For one day, the town in the province of Asti becomes the village of wine, with tastings of Freisa and Malvasia di Castelnuovo Don Bosco DOC offered by local wineries.
The festival is organized by the Associazione Sviluppo di Castelnuovo Don Bosco together with local producers. The date is currently confirmed; the full program with times, tasting stalls, and side events will be announced by the organizers closer to the event.
Castelnuovo Don Bosco is located in the province of Asti, in the Monferrato hills near the border with the Turin province. By car, it can be reached from the motorway exits in the Asti and Chieri areas, continuing along the hilly roads. By train, the reference station is Chieri, with bus connections to the town.
The festival takes place in the historic center of Castelnuovo Don Bosco. For the detailed program, tasting stall hours, and information on how to purchase the tasting glass, it is recommended to check the official channels of the Municipality and the Associazione Sviluppo di Castelnuovo Don Bosco as the event approaches.
