The Madonie festival dedicated to wild fennel, a culinary gem of Blufi
The Wild Fennel Festival is the most cherished event in Blufi, a small town of just over a thousand residents perched at 725 meters on the southern slopes of the Madonie, in the Metropolitan City of Palermo. Originally created to showcase a wild local product, the festival has steadily established itself as one of the most distinctive food and wine events in inland Sicily, drawing visitors from across the island.
The heart of the festival is wild fennel, an aromatic herb that grows spontaneously on the hills of Blufi and, as the Pro Loco notes, is tied to an ancient tradition of family foraging. Along the village streets, stalls offer a rich themed menu: pasta with ragรน and fennel, seasoned meatballs, sausage and burgers with fennel seeds, the typical Blufi schiacciate (flatbreads), and even cannoli with fennel-infused ricotta, gelato, and liqueur. It is a true encyclopedia of taste built around a single, humble excellence.
The program spans Saturday and Sunday with a packed calendar of activities. It begins with "Blufi at the Table," featuring readings on food and traditional recipes curated by the municipal library and local students, followed by the official inauguration with the Craft Fair and the Food Publishing Festival. Sunday is dedicated to tradition: the excursion to the Roman Bridge, the "Tamburinata" (drum parade) through the streets, traveling folk performances, guided tastings, and entertainment for families and children.
Beyond the food, the festival offers a schedule of entertainment that spans genres and times: evening musical shows and DJ sets, ballroom and group dancing, martial arts exhibitions, stilt walkers, magic shows, and cabaret. A rhythm that transforms the small Madonie village into a sprawling stage where conviviality is an integral part of the experience.
Since 2025, the Wild Fennel Festival of Blufi has been part of the Authentic Festivals of Italy circuit, a recognition that rewards events capable of preserving popular culture and the bond with the territory. An important showcase for Blufi and the Madonie, a land of villages, sanctuaries like the Madonna dell'Olio, and landscapes that deserve to be discovered beyond the festival.
The 2026 edition, the tenth of the event, confirmed the two-day format. Saturday, May 9, the day opened at 4:00 PM with "Blufi at the Table," food readings at the council chamber, followed at 5:00 PM by the inauguration with the Craft Fair and the Food Publishing Festival. In the afternoon, a Ju-Jitsu exhibition by Asd Accademia Samurai, at 7:00 PM the APERISAGRA with musical entertainment, at 10:00 PM the "Radio Time 90 Dance show," and at midnight the EMME|GGI DJ set.
Sunday, May 10, featured the excursion to the Roman Bridge, the "Tamburinata" through the village streets, the folk show by the AUSER group from Polizzi Generosa, wild fennel tastings, ballroom dancing, stilt walker shows, the Mago Max family show, and the "Che Spettacolo" cabaret, concluding at 10:30 PM.
Blufi can be reached by car via the SS120 Etna and Madonie road; the village is about two hours from Palermo and just over an hour from Cefalรน. The nearest train station is Petralia Soprana on the Palermo-Catania line.
Admission to the festival is free. Tastings and dishes can be purchased at the stalls along the town center streets. Parking areas are available for motorcycles and campers.
Event organized by the Pro Loco of Blufi with the patronage of the Municipality of Blufi.
