The spring flavors of the Monti Dauni, served in Rocchetta Sant'Antonio
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Every spring, Rocchetta Sant'Antonio, a small village perched in the Monti Dauni in the province of Foggia, dedicates an evening to the ingredient that signals the awakening of the countryside: wild asparagus. The Wild Asparagus Festival is a cherished community event that brings locals, curious travelers, and visitors together in Piazza Maria Teresa Di Lascia to savor the spontaneous flavors of the land. This is no ordinary village fair: here, tastings are paired with a moment of reflection on the future of local agricultural production, in a village that has made quality and sustainability its hallmark.
Bitter, slender, and fragrant, wild asparagus grows spontaneously among the pastures and hedgerows of the Daunian hinterland and is hand-picked in the weeks leading up to the festival. On the table, it is featured in many traditional peasant recipes: stew with asparagus, the classic asparagus omelet, lamb and veal main courses, all accompanied by local cured meats and cheeses, taralli, and a glass of Aglianico. It is a menu that tells the story of rural Capitanata, made of zero-kilometer ingredients and recipes passed down through generations.
The festival is also an opportunity to discover Rocchetta Sant'Antonio, awarded the Orange Flag by the Italian Touring Club. Nestled in a panoramic position on the border between Puglia, Campania, and Basilicata, the village preserves a historic center filled with alleys, stairways, and an imposing castle. Strolling through its streets before or after the festival is part of the experience: the event thus becomes an invitation to explore one of the most authentic and lesser-known corners of inland Puglia.
The evening kicks off with a round table dedicated to the sustainability of agricultural production and the role of asparagus as a development opportunity for the region, featuring agronomists, agricultural technicians, representatives of the farming world, and the GAL Meridaunia. Once the discussion concludes, the square transforms: tastings begin, accompanied by live folk music that warms the atmosphere with pizzica, tarantella, and traditional songs, for a celebration that lasts late into the night.
Promoted by the Municipality of Rocchetta Sant'Antonio as part of the PNRR Borghi project funded by the European Union, the event combines the promotion of agri-food resources, the revitalization of the historic center, and the involvement of local associations. It is a testament to a small municipality that focuses on its identity and typical products to showcase its territory far beyond the borders of the province of Foggia.
The Municipality of Rocchetta Sant'Antonio has not yet officially announced the dates and program for the 2026 edition of the Wild Asparagus Festival. The event, dedicated to the spontaneous product that symbolizes the Monti Dauni, is traditionally held in early spring in Piazza Maria Teresa Di Lascia, featuring tastings, local wines, and live folk music. As soon as official dates and details are released, this page will be updated with the complete program.
The festival takes place in Piazza Maria Teresa Di Lascia, in the historic center of Rocchetta Sant'Antonio (FG), in the Monti Dauni area.
By car: Rocchetta Sant'Antonio can be reached via the SS655 Bradanica and the provincial roads of the Alta Capitanata, on the border between Puglia, Campania, and Basilicata. The nearest train station is Rocchetta Sant'Antonio-Lacedonia, on the line to Foggia. Nearest airports: Bari-Palese and Naples-Capodichino.
The event takes place in the evening, usually starting at 7:00 PM. Admission to the festival in the square is free; tastings of wild asparagus dishes are available to the public throughout the evening.
Take advantage of your visit to explore the village, an Italian Touring Club Orange Flag recipient, and its castle. Bring clothing suitable for early May evenings, which can still be cool in the Daunian hinterland.
