The summer country festival of the Marlengo Alpini, featuring South Tyrolean specialties and live music at the Festplatz.
The Wiesenfest of the Gruppo Alpini is the traditional summer country festival hosted by the Alpini Group of Marlengo (Marling in German), a municipality in the Burgraviato district situated at an altitude of about 360 meters at the foot of Monte San Vigilio, between the city of Merano and the entrance to the Val Venosta in the province of Bolzano (Trentino-Alto Adige). Every summer, usually towards the end of August, the town's Festplatz transforms into the beating heart of community life: two days of open-air conviviality where the Alpini welcome residents and guests with their renowned hospitality.
The festival thrives on the genuine atmosphere of South Tyrolean village fairs. Under the tents and in the shade of the trees, visitors can enjoy South Tyrolean culinary specialties and alpine dishes, accompanied by fresh beer and local wines from this land of apple orchards and vineyards. Live music energizes both days, with bands and groups ranging from Tyrolean folk music to festive hits, creating a warm atmosphere enjoyed by families and visitors of all ages.
The Alpini Group of Marlengo, part of the National Alpini Association (South Tyrol Section), traces its roots back to 1932 and has over one hundred members. Throughout the year, the group is a key player in numerous local initiatives, from the autumn chestnut festival (Castagnata alpina) to the Törggelen, upholding the alpine spirit and fostering collaboration with local associations, including German-speaking ones. The Wiesenfest is their premier summer event, serving as a meeting point for the town's Italian and German-speaking communities.
The village of Marlengo is famous for its century-old brass band, the apple crown that parades every autumn at the Merano Grape Festival, and the Marlinger Waalweg, the longest trail along an ancient irrigation channel in South Tyrol (about 12 kilometers). Attending the Wiesenfest is therefore also a perfect opportunity to discover one of the most charming villages in the Merano area, amidst scenic walks, apple orchards, and vineyards.
An authentic festival, ideal for those wishing to experience the tradition and conviviality of South Tyrol away from the major tourist crowds.
