The country festival of the young farmers of Tirolo, in South Tyrol above Merano
The Wiesenfest der Bauernjugend of Tirolo is the traditional summer country festival of the village of Tirolo (Dorf Tirol), in the municipality of the same name in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, in Trentino-South Tyrol. Nestled on a sunny terrace above Merano and dominated by the famous Castel Tirolo, which gave its name to the entire historical region, the village transforms for one evening into a large outdoor meeting point on the Festwiese, the festival meadow on the edge of the town.
The festival is promoted by the local group of the Südtiroler Bauernjugend (South Tyrolean Young Farmers' Union), the largest youth organization in South Tyrol, which brings together young people from the rural world committed to caring for the landscape and maintaining peasant traditions. The proceeds from the evening support the association's activities, while the organization—from the kitchen to table service—is entirely entrusted to volunteers.
The program follows the classic pattern of South Tyrolean village festivals: live music with traditional bands and groups, culinary specialties typical of South Tyrol, dancing, and outdoor entertainment. The tables serve hearty dishes of peasant cuisine—from dumplings to roasts, from sausages to desserts—accompanied by local beer and wines, while the dance floor gathers locals and guests until late in the evening.
As this is a completely outdoor festival, the Wiesenfest is held only in good weather: in the event of adverse weather conditions, the event is cancelled. It is therefore worth checking for confirmation with the Tirolo Tourist Association before setting off.
The festival is also an excellent excuse to visit one of the most picturesque villages in the Merano area: the Falzeben promenade, the St. Oswald trail, the bird sanctuary of Castel Tirolo, and the nearby Castel Fontana make for a complete day out. From Merano, the village can be reached in a few minutes by car or by the local urban bus line.
The Wiesenfest der Bauernjugend of Tirolo 2026 took place on Friday, July 3, 2026, from 6:00 PM on the Festwiese in Tirolo. The evening, organized by the local Bauernjugend group, featured live music, South Tyrolean peasant cuisine, local beer and wines, with the dance floor open until late at night. As an outdoor event, it was subject to weather conditions.
Tirolo (Dorf Tirol) is located above Merano, in South Tyrol. By car from the A22 motorway, take the Bolzano Sud exit, then the MeBo expressway to Merano and drive up towards Tirolo. By train to Merano, then take the urban bus to Tirolo. The Festwiese is located on the edge of the town center.
Free admission, food and drinks for purchase. Starts at 6:00 PM. Outdoor festival: takes place only in good weather.
