The harvest festival featuring rural traditions, workshops, and Southern Italian dances at the Arignano Mill
The Wheat Festival in Arignano is one of the most cherished traditions of the Chieri hills, in the heart of the Metropolitan City of Turin, Piedmont. Every year, as summer begins, the small village gathers around its Mill on Via del Lago to celebrate the harvest: wheat is cut by hand with scythes and an antique binder, exactly as it was done in the countryside of yesteryear.
The core of the event is both educational and identity-focused. The traditional harvest, accompanied by the dësgoita (the binding of the sheaves) performed by the Arignano Alpini Group, becomes an opportunity to teach children and teenagers the journey from sowing to bread. In the weeks leading up to the event, children also participate in a workshop to create scarecrows, which are then displayed in the village fields and gardens and awarded prizes during the festival.
The afternoon is packed with activities designed for families and visitors of all ages: workshops for children, games, archery, a bike ride between the mill, the lake, and the panoramic views of the hills, traditional snacks, and music. The festival concludes with a large communal dinner prepared by the Pro Loco Arignano and Southern Italian dances animated by the Paranza del Geco, which draw the audience into the dance until late at night.
The Wheat Festival is a celebration of the entire community: it is born from the collaboration between Pro Loco Arignano, the Cu.Bi.Ar association, the Alpini Group, and the ADAV blood donors, with the support of the Municipality of Arignano. It is an appointment that combines the promotion of Piedmontese rural traditions, the conviviality of the table, and the pleasure of being together in the open air, in one of the most evocative corners of the Turin hills.
