The rural culture of the Monti Dauni through harvesting, ancient crafts, and traditional flavors

The Wheat and Ancient Crafts Festival is one of the most defining events of the summer in Roseto Valfortore, a village in the Monti Dauni area of the Foggia province, in Apulia. For a few days in July, the town transforms into an open-air museum of rural culture: the ancient gestures of harvesting and threshing wheat take center stage once again, alongside the crafts and wisdom of a bygone era that shaped life in the inland areas of the Daunian Apennines.
The heart of the event is the re-enactment of rituals linked to wheat: demonstrations of harvesting and threshing using traditional methods and tools, bread-making workshops with bread baked in the village's historic ovens, and the staging of the ancient crafts that once animated alleys and workshops. Visitors can observe traditional craftsmanship up close, rediscovering a heritage of knowledge passed down from generation to generation.
Alongside the re-enactments, the festival is a culinary journey through the stone alleys of the historic center: stalls featuring local products, rustic tastings, and dishes from the rural civilization of the Monti Dauni. Evenings are enlivened by folk groups, town bands, and folk music concerts that fill the village squares, while there is no shortage of moments dedicated to children with games and activities.
The event is promoted by the Municipality of Roseto Valfortore together with the Pro Loco and is part of the town's summer program. Roseto Valfortore is certified as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy and has been awarded the Orange Flag by the Italian Touring Club: a natural amphitheater of stone houses, water mills, and trails like the one leading to the Rocchetta, which provide the ideal setting for a festival that unites memory, community, and slow tourism.
The 2026 edition of the Wheat and Ancient Crafts Festival is featured in the summer program of Roseto Valfortore, which for 2026 proposes four months of events including traditions, music, trekking, and the flavors of the Monti Dauni, with July as the central month. At the moment, the Municipality and the Pro Loco have not yet released the precise dates or the program for the event: information will be updated as soon as it becomes available on the village's official channels.
