The traditional autumn festival of Monguelfo in the Puster Valley
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Welsberger Kirta is the traditional autumn festival of Monguelfo/Welsberg, located in the municipality of Monguelfo-Tesido/Welsberg-Taisten in the province of Bolzano, deep in the Puster Valley. The term "Kirta" (from the German Kirchtag, literally "church day") refers to one of the most deep-rooted popular festivals in Tyrolean and South Tyrolean tradition. Originally tied to the anniversary of the local church's consecration, the Kirchtag has evolved over centuries into a community celebration marking the end of the agricultural season.
The heart and soul of the Welsberger Kirta is the Musikkapelle Welsberg, the local brass band, whose history dates back to 1838. The band opens the festivities with a characteristic traditional costume parade through the town center, eventually reaching the main square for a lively request concert (Wunschkonzert), where the audience can choose their favorite tunes, ranging from great Tyrolean band classics to beloved folk melodies.
As with any authentic Puster Valley festival, the Welsberger Kirta is a perfect opportunity to savor Tyrolean specialties. The food stalls set up in the square offer typical mountain cuisine, most notably the Kirtakrapfen—traditional fried pastries prepared specifically for the Kirchtag, serving as a true gastronomic symbol of the event.
The Welsberger Kirta is more than just a festival; it is a celebration of identity that brings the entire community of Monguelfo-Tesido and visitors to the Puster Valley together in an authentic, family-friendly atmosphere. Music, tradition, fine food, and the golden hues of the Puster autumn make this day one of the most genuine ways to discover the popular culture of South Tyrol, a region where Tyrolean traditions remain vibrant and cherished.
The 2026 edition of the Welsberger Kirta is expected this autumn in Monguelfo/Welsberg, Puster Valley, following the usual October Kirchtag tradition. Official dates have not yet been published. The program is expected to follow the proven formula: a parade of the Musikkapelle Welsberg in traditional costume, a request concert in the main square, and food stalls offering Tyrolean specialties and Kirtakrapfen. Admission is free.
Monguelfo/Welsberg is located in the Puster Valley, in the province of Bolzano.
