The dawn run through the medieval alleys of Fabriano
The Wake Up Run – Di Corsa nel Medioevo is a non-competitive and competitive running race that takes place in the early morning hours in the historic center of Fabriano, a city in the province of Ancona famous worldwide for its ancient paper-making tradition. The event is named after the idea of "waking up" the city by running at dawn, when the streets are still quiet and the low light enhances the stone of the historic buildings.
The start and finish are set in Piazza del Comune, the monumental main square of Fabriano, dominated by the Palazzo del Podestà and the Sturinalto Fountain. The course develops entirely within the medieval walls, crossing alleys and narrow streets of the ancient core. Two routes are planned: a short loop of about 3.75 km and a long route of about 7.5 km, obtained by repeating the loop twice, to accommodate both walkers and more trained runners.
The event is organized by A.S.D. Podistica AVIS Fabriano in collaboration with the Ente Palio San Giovanni Battista and is included in the rich program of the Palio di San Giovanni Battista, the historical reenactment that every June brings Fabriano back to its Middle Ages with parades, flag-wavers, taverns, and the challenge between the four city districts (Borgo, Cervara, Piano, and Pisana). Running among the tower houses and arches of the center while the city prepares for the Palio days offers a unique atmosphere, suspended between sport and popular tradition.
Fabriano, recognized as a UNESCO Creative City for its paper production, retains a compact and easily navigable historic center, ideal for a run that is also an early morning guided tour. The Wake Up Run combines the sporting aspect with the enhancement of the urban heritage, confirming itself as an anticipated event of Fabriano's June in the Marche Region.
The date for the 2026 edition is official: Sunday, June 21, 2026. The event is part of the central days of the Palio di San Giovanni Battista (June 12–24, 2026). Organized by Podistica AVIS Fabriano, with a dawn route in the historic center (short loop and long route). The registration form and regulations are published on the organizer's website.
