About Giochi de le Porte

In the last week of September, Gualdo Tadino returns to the 15th century. The Giochi de le Porte is the grand historical reenactment that divides the city into four districts (contrade) โ€” San Benedetto, San Donato, San Facondino, San Martino โ€” ready to compete for the Palio of Saint Michael the Archangel. Three days of historical procession with about a thousand costumed participants, flag-wavers and drummers performances, slingshot, archery, and crossbow competitions, open taverns, and the spectacular final donkey race in the arena. An authentic dive into medieval Gualdo, between history, legend, and popular passion.

The Giochi de le Porte, the medieval soul of Gualdo Tadino

Every year, on the last Sunday of September, Gualdo Tadino โ€” a town in upper Umbria in the province of Perugia, at the foot of Mount Serra Santa โ€” rediscovers its medieval identity with the Giochi de le Porte, one of the most heartfelt historical reenactments in the region. The city is divided into four Porte (Gates), the ancient districts named after the access gates to the village: Porta San Benedetto (yellow tower on a blue field), Porta San Donato (white field), Porta San Facondino (green field), and Porta San Martino (red field).

The challenge for the Palio of Saint Michael the Archangel

The four Gates compete for the Palio of Saint Michael the Archangel, dedicated to the city's patron saint. The challenge is not just sporting: each Gate works all year round preparing its historical procession, 15th-century costumes, and athletes who compete. About a thousand participants in period dress parade through the streets of the center, depicting allegorical scenes or daily life of the 15th century, accompanied by handcrafted floats.

Competitions and Taverns

The competitive heart of the Games consists of the competitions between the Gates: slingshot shooting, archery, the crossbowmen's competition, and especially the famous donkey race, the symbolic animal beloved by the people of Gualdo, which takes place in the main arena. During the festival days, the four Gates' taverns open their doors, offering traditional Umbrian dishes in an atmosphere that takes you back centuries.

A festival for the entire community

The Giochi de le Porte are much more than a show for tourists: they are the moment when the entire community of Gualdo Tadino recognizes itself in its roots. The organization is managed by the Ente Giochi de le Porte APS, which defines the themes of the historical processions each year and ensures the philological quality of costumes and sets. It is an unmissable event for those who want to experience the most authentic Umbria, far from mass tourist circuits.

Giochi de le Porte โ€” edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Giochi de le Porte takes place from September 27 to 29. As early as April, the Organizing Committee and the Artistic Commission unveiled the themes of the historical processions of the four Gates, with the debut of a new series of costumes designed by costume designer Massimo Gottardi. Three days of historical procession, competitions between the districts, and the final donkey race for the Palio of Saint Michael the Archangel.

The 2026 edition of the Giochi de le Porte in Gualdo Tadino is scheduled from September 27 to 29, 2026. On April 13, 2026, at the Talia Theater, the Ente Giochi de le Porte and the Artistic Commission presented the themes of the historical processions at the conference "Historical Processions: Guardians of History and Emotions." Among the announced innovations is the complete redesign of the costumes by the Technical Commission, designed by costume designer Massimo Gottardi, confirming the commitment to the historical and artistic quality of the event. The four Gates will compete for the Palio of Saint Michael the Archangel in the traditional competitions: slingshot shooting, archery, crossbow competition, and the donkey race.
