A week of challenges between districts in the mining village of Cabernardi
The Palio della Miniera di Zolfo di Cabernardi is the great summer festival of Cabernardi, a hamlet in the Municipality of Sassoferrato, in the hinterland of the province of Ancona, in the Marche region. For a whole week, from the first to the second Sunday in August, the village relives the rhythm that marked its history: that of the sulfur mine which, until its closure in 1959, provided work for over sixteen hundred miners and made this village one of the most important deposits in Europe.
The Palio was born in 1999 from the initiative of three young people from the village and has been organized since 2003 by the Associazione Palio della Miniera di Zolfo (Sulfur Mine Palio Association). It is not a simple sagra (food festival): it is a collective re-enactment in which an entire community re-stages its peasant and working-class identity through games, cuisine, and celebration.
The heart of the Palio is the challenge between the four districts of Cabernardi, each with its own color rich in meaning:
For a week, the districts compete for the Palio in a series of games that recall the daily life of the village up to the 1950s: tug-of-war, sprints, sack races, jar races, sheet throwing, the miner's cartridge, grape stomping, scythe challenges, and many other tests.
Among the most cherished moments is the Traversata delle Miniere (Mine Crossing), a roughly ten-kilometer road race on a mixed course that crosses the sulfur village. The runners' relay concludes with the handover of the baton to the "miners," who dig in their respective tunnels filled with "ginese" (a type of earth): whoever first manages to extract the sulfur wins. This is the famous Sfida del Minatore (Miner's Challenge), a decisive test that often awards the Palio.
The Palio is also an opportunity to rediscover the history of the mine, discovered in 1886 and managed by Montecatini from 1917, the scene in 1952 of the "Living Dead" occupation told in Gillo Pontecorvo's film Pane e Zolfo (Bread and Sulfur). Today in Cabernardi, you can visit the Parco Archeominerario (Archaeological Mining Park), the Museo Miniera di Zolfo (Sulfur Mine Museum), and the new Cammino Pozzo Donegani (Pozzo Donegani Path), inaugurated in May 2026.
Every evening, food stalls offer traditional Marche dishes, while dance orchestras, Latin nights, discos for the younger generation, and comedy shows accompany the festival until late at night. An event that combines popular sport, working-class memory, and conviviality in the heart of the Marche Apennines.
In 2026, the Palio della Miniera di Zolfo di Cabernardi celebrates its 25th anniversary with a special edition scheduled from August 2nd to 9th, following the tradition of holding the festival from the first to the second Sunday in August.
For a whole week, the four districts of Cabernardi — Cabernardi Est, Cabernardi Ovest, Doglio, and Felcine — will compete for the Palio in tests that recall the mining and peasant history of the village. The path to the anniversary has been accompanied by dedicated initiatives, including the inauguration of the Cammino Pozzo Donegani in May 2026, with four panoramic benches dedicated to the colors of the districts.
The detailed day-by-day program, with times, competitions, and evening guests, will be published by the Associazione Palio della Miniera di Zolfo on its official channels in the weeks preceding the event.

The Palio is held in Cabernardi, a hamlet of the Municipality of Sassoferrato (AN), in the Marche region. The competitions and stalls are concentrated in the area around the former school building and in the village streets.
By car: from Sassoferrato, Cabernardi can be reached in a few minutes by following the signs for the hamlet. The most convenient motorway exit is the A14 towards the Ancona hinterland, then internal roads towards Sassoferrato. The nearest train station is Fabriano, from which to continue by car.
Access to the festival is free. Food stalls and evening events have their own charges. For updated times, reservations, and program details, consult the official website or the Facebook page of the Associazione Palio della Miniera di Zolfo (tel. +39 329 0737105).
