The Salento dialect theatre festival in Galatone
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Every summer, in the historic centre of Galatone—a town in the province of Lecce, deep in the heart of Salento—the Atrio del Palazzo Marchesale transforms into an open-air theatre for Vox Populi, a dialect theatre festival that gathers locals and the many holidaymakers visiting Puglia during the warmer months under the stars. The event has become a staple of the city's cultural calendar, drawing families and enthusiasts of all ages to enjoy the genuine humour of plays performed in the local vernacular.
At the heart of the festival are the dialect comedies performed in the Salento vernacular, a linguistic and cultural heritage that Vox Populi helps preserve for future generations. Each evening is hosted by a different local amateur troupe: non-professional actors take to the stage with passion and wit, bringing to life stories of village life, family misunderstandings, and iconic characters from Salento tradition. The result is a form of popular, immediate, and engaging theatre that finds its strength in laughter and the joy of connecting with one's native language.
Performances are held in the Atrio del Palazzo Marchesale, one of Galatone's most evocative historic buildings, providing an intimate and scenic backdrop for summer evenings. Shows take place at night, when the heat of the day gives way to a cool breeze, and the atmosphere of the historic courtyard enhances the bond between the audience and the performers.
The festival is conceived and organized by the Compagnia ti Santu Luca, a historic amateur theatre group from Galatone, in collaboration with the Pro Loco and under the patronage of the Galatone municipal administration and the Province of Lecce. Vox Populi is part of the broader Estate Galatea, the town's summer program that offers over fifty events each year, ranging from theatre, music, and dance to cinema, sports, and author meetings, running from June to September.
In 2026, Vox Populi reaches its eleventh edition, confirmed by the Municipality of Galatone as part of the Estate Galatea program. While exact dates and the lineup of companies for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced, the festival remains one of the most anticipated events of the Galatone summer, continuing a tradition that has built a loyal following over the years.
