The tradition of Conte Roberto and Perinzia, featuring the bean stew feast and allegorical floats
In the heart of the Canavese, in the Province of Turin, the Volpiano Carnival is one of the most beloved events on the town's festive calendar. Organized by the Pro Loco Volpiano, it brings together citizens, families, and local associations every year for a celebration filled with color, music, and tradition that enlivens the historic center between February and March.
The heart and soul of the event are its two official masks, Conte Roberto and Perinzia, who represent the emblem and history of Volpiano. Each edition features the investiture of new performers, chosen from among the volunteers and key figures of town life, accompanied by their costumed entourage. The investiture ceremony, marked by the symbolic handing over of the city keys by the Mayor, officially kicks off the festivities.
Everything begins with the Grande Fagiolata, the inaugural gastronomic event hosted in the Sala Polivalente on Via Trieste. It is the evening when Conte Roberto and Perinzia are presented, amidst musical entertainment and the conviviality typical of Piedmontese village festivals. A simple, popular dish, the bean stew, gathers the community around the table before the street celebrations begin.
The most anticipated moment is the parade of allegorical floats and masked walking groups, which travels through the streets of the center: starting from the designated point, the parade crosses Via Trento, Corso Regina Margherita, Via Brandizzo, and Corso Platone before reaching Piazza Italia. The procession is always led by Conte Roberto and Perinzia with their court, followed by floats created by local groups and associations. Along the route, thousands of festive people crowd the sidewalks to enjoy the show.
The Volpiano Carnival is much more than just a party: it is an initiative that promotes the region and strengthens the sense of community belonging. Thanks to the hard work of the Pro Loco, volunteers, the Civil Protection, and numerous associations, the event renews itself every year, keeping alive a tradition that is an integral part of the identity of Volpiano and the Canavese.
