The district palio of Villanova Mondovì
Villanova in Palio is the event that lights up the town of Villanova Mondovì, in the Monregalese area of the Cuneo province (Piedmont), every summer. Known to all as the Palio dei Rioni, the event pits the town's twelve districts against each other in a long competition spanning nearly three weeks, turning squares and streets into vibrant arenas and party venues.
The Palio dei Rioni is part of the recent history of Villanova Mondovì: held from 2005 to 2009 and again from 2015 to 2018 between Piazza Filippi and Piazza della Rimembranza, it returned with a major new edition that engaged a large part of the population. The contenders are twelve districts—including Annunziata, Pasquero, Villavecchia, Centro, Garavagna, Branzola, Roracco, San Grato, Giardini, Eula, Bongiovanni, and Madonna del Pasco—each with its own colors and team of challengers, in a spirit of healthy local rivalry.
The beauty of the palio lies in the variety of the challenges: ranging from classic sports like bocce to more curious and imaginative traditional games, from egg tossing to board game tournaments, and even sack races and obstacle courses along the town center streets. Competition evenings alternate with social moments, including district dinners and the highly anticipated announcement of the winning district.
Organized by the Pro Loco of Villanova Mondovì, Villanova in Palio is much more than a competition: it is the first major summer event in the local calendar, capable of uniting different generations around district identity and community spirit. For those visiting the Monregalese area, it is the ideal opportunity to discover the most authentic and festive soul of a Piedmontese town in midsummer.
From June 3 to 20, 2026, the Palio dei Rioni returns to Villanova Mondovì, the first major summer event organized by the Pro Loco. The slogan chosen for the edition, "Fun is served", perfectly captures the spirit of the event: the town's twelve districts return to compete over nearly three weeks in a traditional-style competition, consisting of sports races, skill games, and surprise trials.
The Pro Loco has announced a program that aims to combine the community's most cherished traditions with new entertainment proposals, focusing on local identity and the involvement of all of Villanova. The detailed calendar of individual competition evenings is communicated by the organizers on the Municipality and Pro Loco channels in the weeks leading up to the event.
The detailed program of the 2026 competition evenings is published by the Pro Loco of Villanova Mondovì in the weeks preceding the event. The established format includes a series of challenges between the twelve districts—sports races, traditional games, and surprise trials—spread over several evenings from June 3 to 20, with social moments and the final announcement of the winning district.
