Floats, masks, and music in the heart of the Nissena region of Sicily
The Villalba Carnival is one of the most heartfelt and well-attended winter events in the small town of Villalba, located in the province of Caltanissetta, in the heart of Sicily. For a few days, the streets and squares of the historic center transform into an open-air stage, brought to life by allegorical floats, masked groups, confetti, music, and plenty of cheer. Organized by the municipal administration with the essential contribution of the Pro Loco Villalba and local sponsors, the event blends the popular tradition of the Sicilian Carnival with a strong community spirit.
The most anticipated moment is the parade of allegorical floats, built with passion by groups of local artisans and volunteers. These papier-mâché structures, often inspired by films, characters, and current events, travel through the main streets, including Corso Umberto and Piazza Vittorio Emanuele. Alongside the floats, masked groups and schoolchildren—accompanied by teachers and parents—parade in a festive atmosphere that engages all ages.
The Villalba Carnival is not just about parades: the day often concludes with DJ sets, disco nights, and entertainment at the Senior Day Center and in the town squares. Music keeps both adults and children dancing until late, while children's entertainment and games make the event particularly family-friendly. The traditional awards ceremony for the most original costumes and groups is also a highlight, celebrating the creativity of the participants.
More than just an event, the Villalba Carnival is an opportunity for community gathering and sharing: an occasion that showcases the positive energy of the Nissena region and strengthens bonds between generations. Its excellent organization and high turnout make it one of the most appreciated carnivals in the area, drawing visitors from neighboring towns as well.
The Villalba Carnival takes place every year during the Carnival season, between February and March, culminating on the weekend and on Shrove Tuesday. The dates vary from year to year according to the liturgical calendar. Admission to the parades and public events is free.
The 2026 Villalba Carnival reached its peak on Tuesday, February 17, for Shrove Tuesday. The day's program included a morning parade with local schoolchildren at 10:30 AM and an evening procession of allegorical floats at 8:00 PM through the town center, followed by DJ sets and vocalists until midnight at the Senior Day Center.
Among the highlights of this edition was the allegorical float inspired by Avatar, created by a group of local young people (Filippo Fruscione, Simone Saia, Alessandro Messina, Francesco Territo, Santo Frisina, and Giuseppe Plumeri). The event, organized by the municipal administration led by Mayor Maria Paola Immordino with the support of local sponsors and law enforcement, was described as a moment of community gathering and celebration of the positive energy of the Nissena region.
Among the floats, one inspired by the film Avatar, created by local artisans and youth.
