The children's carnival of Val Rendena in Vigo, a village in the municipality of Porte di Rendena
The Vigo Rendena Carnival is the masked event that every year, on the last Sunday of Carnival, adds color to the village of Vigo in the municipality of Porte di Rendena, in Val Rendena (Trentino-Alto Adige). It is a child-friendly festival, carefully organized by the Pro Loco Vigo Rendena, which has included it for years among the fixed appointments of the local calendar together with the Vigo-Darè Musical Corps, the heart of the area's community life.
The afternoon revolves around the children's parade: dozens of children march through the streets of the center dressed in the most imaginative ways. A small competition rewards the best costumes, distinguishing between individual and group categories. The awards ceremony is one of the most anticipated moments and offers original ideas and many laughs every year, with masks ranging from traditional valley trades to the most imaginative characters.
As per Trentino tradition, the festival is also an opportunity to gather around the flavors of Carnival. The Pro Loco volunteers prepare grostoi (typical Trentino sweet fritters), fritters, hot tea, and mulled wine, offered to adults and children along the parade route. The atmosphere is that of a genuine valley festival, where the entire community of Vigo Rendena gathers to bid farewell to the end of winter together.
The Vigo Rendena Carnival is part of a rich calendar of festivals that enliven the Giudicarie and Val Rendena during the Carnival period, from the large carnivals of Storo and Tione to the parades in neighboring towns. Compared to larger events, the one in Vigo retains an intimate and familiar character, perfect for those visiting the valley with children who want to experience an authentic popular tradition, far from the crowds but no less heartfelt.
The 2026 Vigo Rendena Carnival took place on February 19 with great participation: 74 individual masks and over 90 children in total took part in the parade organized by the Pro Loco. In the individual category, the competition awarded the motorcyclist (first place), followed by the lumberjack and the pink panther. Among the groups, the ostriches won, ahead of the flower and butterfly and the little old lady with a rooster. A group of 11 children represented the Winter Olympics, while the Rendena Float, with about 90 young people from the valley and inspired by Oasis, impressed everyone with its size and choreography. There was no shortage of grostoi, fritters, tea, and mulled wine prepared by the volunteers.
The festival takes place in the center of the village of Vigo Rendena, municipality of Porte di Rendena (TN), in Val Rendena. It can be reached by car via the SS239 Val Rendena road; the nearest airport and train stations are in Trento and Brescia.
