The parade of the demonic creatures of the Alps in the village of Spiazzo, Val Rendena

In the heart of winter, just as the Christmas lights begin to dim, the village of Spiazzo in Val Rendena (Trento province, Trentino-Alto Adige) hosts one of the most anticipated and feared events of the season: the Krampus parade. The stars of the show are the Zimbar Taifel, a group that brings the ancient demonic figures of Alpine folklore to the streets, joined by other local troupes.
The Krampus are terrifying creatures of Alpine tradition: half-man and half-goat, with long horns, sharp teeth, protruding tongues, fur coats, chains, and whips. Legend has it that young mountaineers disguised themselves as monsters during times of famine; Saint Nicholas is said to have driven out the devil who had infiltrated their ranks, and ever since, the Krampus have marched each year alongside the Saint, who brings small gifts to well-behaved children. In Trentino, this tradition is deeply felt, and the Zimbar represent a variant linked to the Cimbrian communities.
At dusk, Via San Vigilio fills with smoke, flickering firelight, and the deafening roar of cowbells. The wooden masks, hand-carved and each unique, advance through the crowd of adults and children in a performance that blends spectacle, fear, and tradition. It is an event that draws visitors from across the valley and beyond, capable of turning the small town of Spiazzo into an open-air stage.
The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Spiazzo in collaboration with local Krampus groups. Entry to the parade is free; food and drinks are available for purchase inside the marquee.
The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced. The Krampus parade in Spiazzo is traditionally an event held between Christmas and New Year's: as soon as the Pro Loco of Spiazzo publishes the official date, time, and program, this page will be updated with details regarding the route, participating groups, and refreshments.
Spiazzo is located in Val Rendena, about 50 km from Trento. By car, it can be reached via the SS239 Val Rendena road; parking is available near the town center.
The parade usually takes place in late December, between Christmas and New Year's, in the evening.
Dress in warm winter clothing: the parade is outdoors and temperatures in the valley are freezing. The heated marquee offers shelter, food, and music after the parade.
