About Krampus Zimbar Taifel Spiazzo

Every late December, the village of Spiazzo in Val Rendena transforms into a theater of horns, furs, chains, and cowbells: it is the Krampus parade, featuring the Zimbar Taifel. Hand-carved masks invade Via San Vigilio at dusk, amidst fire, smoke, and the roar of cowbells, for one of the most evocative winter traditions in Trentino. Afterwards, enjoy hot goulash, pretzels, strauben, and live music inside a heated marquee.

The Krampus arrive in Spiazzo

In the heart of winter, just as the Christmas lights begin to dim, the village of Spiazzo in Val Rendena (Trento province, Trentino-Alto Adige) hosts one of the most anticipated and feared events of the season: the Krampus parade. The stars of the show are the Zimbar Taifel, a group that brings the ancient demonic figures of Alpine folklore to the streets, joined by other local troupes.

Who are the Krampus?

The Krampus are terrifying creatures of Alpine tradition: half-man and half-goat, with long horns, sharp teeth, protruding tongues, fur coats, chains, and whips. Legend has it that young mountaineers disguised themselves as monsters during times of famine; Saint Nicholas is said to have driven out the devil who had infiltrated their ranks, and ever since, the Krampus have marched each year alongside the Saint, who brings small gifts to well-behaved children. In Trentino, this tradition is deeply felt, and the Zimbar represent a variant linked to the Cimbrian communities.

The atmosphere of the parade

At dusk, Via San Vigilio fills with smoke, flickering firelight, and the deafening roar of cowbells. The wooden masks, hand-carved and each unique, advance through the crowd of adults and children in a performance that blends spectacle, fear, and tradition. It is an event that draws visitors from across the valley and beyond, capable of turning the small town of Spiazzo into an open-air stage.

More than just a parade

  • Procession through the town center along Via San Vigilio, ending at the square and the sports area
  • Refreshments in the heated marquee with goulash, pretzels, strauben, and hot drinks
  • Musical entertainment in the company of the Krampus
  • Popular tradition that intertwines ancient pagan winter rites with the Christian feast of Saint Nicholas

The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Spiazzo in collaboration with local Krampus groups. Entry to the parade is free; food and drinks are available for purchase inside the marquee.
