About Vicalotto Carnival

Every February, the medieval village of Vico nel Lazio transforms into an open-air stage for the Vicalotto Carnival, one of the most anticipated festivals in the Ciociaria region. Floats, crafted with passion by local associations and residents, depart from the former Pitocco station and parade through the town streets to Piazzale XXIV Maggio, accompanied by music, games, and entertainment for all ages. The day is made even more delicious with traditional frappe, castagnole, sausages, and local wine, creating a joyful atmosphere that brings together young and old while strengthening the community spirit.

The Carnival of the "Carcassonne of Ciociaria"

The Vicalotto Carnival is the festival that brightens up the winter in Vico nel Lazio, a stunning fortified village in the province of Frosinone, nestled in the heart of the Ernici Mountains. Often called the "Carcassonne of Ciociaria" due to its extraordinary 13th-century defensive walls punctuated by twenty-five crenellated towers, the town provides a unique backdrop for the Carnival parade: masks and floats wind through a medieval town center that has remained virtually intact at over 700 meters above sea level. Promoted by the Municipality of Vico nel Lazio with the support of local associations, the event unites different generations in a spirit of joy, creativity, and deep cultural belonging.

The Float Parade

The heart of the festival is the carnival float parade, which traditionally kicks off in the early afternoon from the former Pitocco station, at the foot of the town. These impressive allegorical structures, the result of the hard work, passion, and imagination of local groups and citizens, travel through the village streets in a festive parade filled with music and color, eventually reaching Piazzale XXIV Maggio, where the celebrations continue with shows and entertainment. In case of bad weather, the organizers have an indoor backup plan at the Salvo D'Acquisto parking area, ensuring the Carnival never stops.

Music, Entertainment, and Fun for Everyone

A rich entertainment program revolves around the parade: live music performances, games, children's entertainment, and show segments that involve the entire square. Recent editions have featured guests like the "One-Man Band" and presenters who guide the crowd through dances and confetti. The public is encouraged to attend in costume: the more colorful the town becomes, the more the festival grows.

The Flavors of the Ciociaria Carnival

Like any self-respecting popular festival in Ciociaria, the Vicalotto Carnival is also a celebration of taste. Food stands offer traditional seasonal sweets, frappe and castagnole, accompanied by grilled sausages and local wine: a combination of simple, genuine flavors that tell the story of the rural soul of this corner of Lazio, a land of extra virgin olive oil and ancient gastronomic traditions.

Vico nel Lazio, a Village to Discover

Attending the Carnival is also the perfect opportunity to explore one of the best-preserved medieval villages in the Lazio Region. Vico nel Lazio, awarded the Orange Flag by the Italian Touring Club, preserves its 13th-century walls, gates, and towers, as well as stone alleys, the Church of San Giorgio, and panoramic views overlooking the valley below. A stroll through its narrow streets, before or after the parade, perfectly rounds off the festive day.

A Community Celebration

The Vicalotto Carnival is not a massive commercial event, but an authentic village festival: the floats are born in sheds and courtyards thanks to the voluntary work of families and associations, and the day of celebration is a gift the community gives to itself and its visitors. It is precisely this genuine, participatory dimension that makes it a special appointment in the Ciociaria event calendar.
