Non-competitive walk along the Via Francigena between Sant'Antonino di Susa and Susa
The Via Francigena Marathon Val di Susa is a non-competitive sporting event held in the municipality of Sant'Antonino di Susa and neighboring towns in the Susa Valley, in the Province of Turin, in the heart of Piedmont. The event retraces the historic paths of the Via Francigena, the ancient pilgrimage route that led from Northern Europe to Rome, now rediscovered as a fascinating hiking itinerary.
It is a non-competitive march: there is no ranking or stopwatch, just the pleasure of walking immersed in the alpine landscape and the villages of the valley. The format is open to everyone, from expert hikers to families, making it a highly anticipated date on the Piedmontese outdoor calendar.
The event offers numerous trails with starts from Avigliana and Sant'Antonino di Susa, the two official starting points. The route starting from Sant'Antonino is the Half Marathon Sant'Antonino-Susa, approximately 25 km long with an elevation gain of about 800 meters, ending in the historic town of Susa.
Walking along these paths means crossing one of the most historically rich territories in Piedmont. The route touches ancient villages, forests, terraced fields, and views of alpine peaks, while the full itinerary allows you to reach the famous Sacra di San Michele, the abbey that symbolizes the region, perched on Mount Pirchiriano. The charm of the event lies in this encounter between outdoor activity and the discovery of the cultural and spiritual heritage of the Via Francigena.
Organized by A.S.D. Iride of Rivoli with the support of the Unione Montana Valle Susa and local municipalities, the event attracts hundreds of participants from all over Italy: in addition to Piedmont, walkers arrive from Lombardy, Tuscany, Veneto, Liguria, and Emilia-Romagna, many of whom discover these trails for the first time. Along the routes, various refreshment points manned by volunteers are set up, making the experience accessible and convivial.
The 8th edition of the Via Francigena Marathon Val di Susa was held on Sunday, June 7, 2026, confirming the non-competitive march format on the trails of the Piedmontese Via Francigena.
The Half Marathon of approximately 25 km started from Sant'Antonino di Susa, arriving in Susa with an elevation gain of about 800 meters. The full program included six tracks with starts from Avigliana and Sant'Antonino, refreshment points along the route, and an optional return shuttle service.
