Sunset walks between the village of murals and the flooded rice paddies
The Vercelli Evenings are a series of guided twilight walks held in Rive, a small village in the rice-growing plains of the Vercelli province, in the heart of Piedmont. This initiative was created to help visitors discover, at a slow pace, one of the most characteristic landscapes of the Terre d'Acqua: the flooded rice fields, vast stretches of water that reflect the sky and the colors of the sunset during the evening hours.
The route starts from the Rive Town Hall, at Via 4 Novembre 29, next to the parish church of Beata Vergine Assunta. After walking through the village streets, known for their striking murals that use contemporary art to tell the story and soul of the Vercelli plains, the walk leads into the surrounding countryside, where the silence of the rice fields takes center stage. It is an opportunity to observe wetland wildlife, understand the rice cultivation cycle, and appreciate the rural landscape shaped by human hands over the centuries.
The walks last approximately two hours, start at 6:30 PM, and are led by an environmental hiking guide who shares insights into the nature, history, and traditions of the area along the way. The routes are flat and easy to navigate, making them suitable for those seeking a peaceful experience in contact with nature. Booking is mandatory to allow the organizers to manage the groups effectively.
The Vercelli Evenings are part of a broader tourism development project promoted by the Province of Vercelli and the Borghi delle Vie d'Acqua, in collaboration with the Terre d'Acqua Ecomuseum. Following the success of the Risรฒ festival and the growing interest in slow tourism, these evening walks invite residents and visitors to rediscover the authentic beauty of the Vercelli rice landscape, amidst street art, abbeys, farmsteads, and the unmistakable horizon of flooded rice fields.
Two dates were on the calendar for the 2026 edition: Thursday, May 14 and Thursday, May 21, both meeting at 6:30 PM at the Rive Town Hall (Via 4 Novembre 29).
Each evening featured a guided walk that, starting next to the parish church of Beata Vergine Assunta, crossed the village streets before reaching the flooded rice fields, experiencing the unique atmosphere of the Vercelli landscape at sunset.
The walks were led by an environmental hiking guide, with booking mandatory via the Vercellioutdoor website.
