About Vecchiano District Palio

For over a month, from June to July, the municipality of Vecchiano, in the province of Pisa, comes alive with the Vecchiano District Palio, one of the most cherished local summer traditions. Four historic districts—Vecchiano Centro, Vecchianello all'Estero, San Frediano, and Fornace Castello—compete in games, sports, and parades, filling squares and sports fields with vibrant colors, elaborate sets, and a strong sense of community. It is a popular festival that combines competition, entertainment, and charitable commitment.

A summer of color and district rivalry in Vecchiano

The Vecchiano District Palio is the major summer festival of the municipality of Vecchiano, located in the province of Pisa, in the heart of Tuscany. For over a month, from June to July, the entire town transforms into a stage for colors, challenges, and joy, as the four historic districts vie for the coveted title. The event is part of the Estate Vecchianese (Vecchiano Summer) and is held under the patronage of the Municipality of Vecchiano.

The four competing districts

At the heart of the event lies the rivalry—always friendly and lighthearted—between the four districts that enliven the municipal area:

  • Vecchiano Centro, the reigning champion
  • Vecchianello all'Estero
  • San Frediano
  • Fornace Castello

Each district showcases its own colors, teams, and creative displays, involving residents of all ages in weeks of competitions and activities.

Competitions, challenges, and the "Most Beautiful District" Contest

The event kicks off with a traditional inaugural parade through the town center, accompanied by the 8th "Most Beautiful District" Contest, which rewards creativity, set design, and district spirit. The jury includes local figures, from the mayor to prominent names in local sports and culture. In the following weeks, at the Coronella sports field, the districts face off in rounds of games and challenges to determine the finalists, leading up to the highly anticipated finals.

The Little Palio and the spirit of solidarity

Among the most beloved events is "The Little Palio", dedicated to children and held for a charitable cause: proceeds are donated to the "Insieme per Sognare" association, which is committed to social and solidarity initiatives. This represents the most authentic side of the festival, where competition gives way to sharing and supporting the community.

A tradition that unites the town

Now in its 23rd edition, the Vecchiano District Palio has become a staple of the Pisan summer, capable of involving entire families and strengthening the bonds between the residents of the districts. More than just a competition, it is a collective celebration that reflects the identity and vitality of a small village on the plains between Pisa and the coast.
