The summer challenge between the four districts of Vecchiano, blending sport, tradition, and solidarity
The Vecchiano District Palio is the major summer festival of the municipality of Vecchiano, located in the province of Pisa, in the heart of Tuscany. For over a month, from June to July, the entire town transforms into a stage for colors, challenges, and joy, as the four historic districts vie for the coveted title. The event is part of the Estate Vecchianese (Vecchiano Summer) and is held under the patronage of the Municipality of Vecchiano.
At the heart of the event lies the rivalry—always friendly and lighthearted—between the four districts that enliven the municipal area:
Each district showcases its own colors, teams, and creative displays, involving residents of all ages in weeks of competitions and activities.
The event kicks off with a traditional inaugural parade through the town center, accompanied by the 8th "Most Beautiful District" Contest, which rewards creativity, set design, and district spirit. The jury includes local figures, from the mayor to prominent names in local sports and culture. In the following weeks, at the Coronella sports field, the districts face off in rounds of games and challenges to determine the finalists, leading up to the highly anticipated finals.
Among the most beloved events is "The Little Palio", dedicated to children and held for a charitable cause: proceeds are donated to the "Insieme per Sognare" association, which is committed to social and solidarity initiatives. This represents the most authentic side of the festival, where competition gives way to sharing and supporting the community.
Now in its 23rd edition, the Vecchiano District Palio has become a staple of the Pisan summer, capable of involving entire families and strengthening the bonds between the residents of the districts. More than just a competition, it is a collective celebration that reflects the identity and vitality of a small village on the plains between Pisa and the coast.
The 23rd edition of the Vecchiano District Palio brings Vecchiano to life for over a month, from June 1st to July 4th, 2026. The themes chosen for this edition range from the 80s to prehistory, from "Made in Italy" to hospitality, inspiring the set designs of the competing districts.
The opening is scheduled for June 1st at 8:00 PM with the traditional inaugural parade and the 8th "Most Beautiful District" Contest. This is followed by competition rounds at the Coronella field in the subsequent weeks, leading up to the finals on Saturday, June 27th. The event concludes on Saturday, July 4th, at 7:30 PM in Piazza Pier Paolo Pasolini with a grand final evening alongside our friends from Pisa Mania.
The events take place in the historic center of Vecchiano (PI), across various squares and nearby locations, and at the Coronella sports field for the competitions. The final celebration is held in Piazza Pier Paolo Pasolini.
By car: Vecchiano is accessible via the SS1 Aurelia and the A12 motorway (Pisa Nord exit). By train: Pisa Centrale station is a few kilometers away, with local connections to the area. By plane: Pisa "Galileo Galilei" Airport is approximately 15 km away.
Outdoor events are generally free to attend. For the detailed program and updated schedules, it is recommended to check the official channels of the Municipality of Vecchiano.
