The festival celebrating the Valle del Belice sheep breed in Santa Ninfa

In the heart of the Valle del Belice, the town of Santa Ninfa (Province of Trapani, Sicily) hosts the Valle del Belice Sheep Festival every autumn, affectionately known as "A Day as a Sheep". The event is entirely dedicated to the indigenous Valle del Belice sheep breed, raised for centuries on these pastures, and the many products derived from it: meat, milk, and cheese. It is an appointment that weaves together gastronomy, pastoral tradition, and local identity, drawing thousands of visitors from all over Western Sicily every year.
The 17th-century historic center of Santa Ninfa turns into a large gastronomic village. Along Piazza Libertà and Via Garibaldi, stands, exhibition spaces, and covered dining areas are set up to sample sheep meat specialties. Key dishes include sheep arrosticini, stigghiola, boiled and roasted mutton, pasta with lamb and mutton ragù, couscous, soups, and local cheeses. Traditional Sicilian desserts like cannoli and cassatelle are also in abundance.
The dairy heart of the festival is the Vastedda della Valle del Belice PDO, the only stretched-curd cheese made from sheep's milk, recognizable by its focaccia-like shape and fresh, delicate taste. The event is also an opportunity to discover the work of local breeders and shepherds up close, as they are the guardians of a prized sheep breed and knowledge passed down through generations.
Beyond the tastings, the festival offers musical entertainment along the entire route and, in recent editions, free concerts by nationally renowned artists held in Piazza Libertà. For families, there is a fairground area dedicated to children, while those arriving from out of town can access free parking areas for campers, coaches, and motorcycles, a sign of the organizers' attention to an increasingly regional audience.
Organized by the Municipality of Santa Ninfa in collaboration with local breeders, the festival is traditionally held in November and represents one of the most iconic food and wine events in the Valle del Belice. For those who want to experience authentic Sicily, far from the main tourist routes, "A Day as a Sheep" is the perfect occasion to savor the flavors of Sicilian pastoral life and enjoy the hospitality of a village in the Trapani province.
The Valle del Belice Sheep Festival returns to Santa Ninfa, as is customary, in November. The precise dates and the program for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially communicated. The event, dedicated to the Valle del Belice sheep breed and its derivatives, will once again feature the usual gastronomic trail between Piazza Libertà and Via Garibaldi, with tastings, local products, and musical entertainment.
Santa Ninfa is located in the Province of Trapani, in the Valle del Belice. By car, it is accessible via the A29 Palermo-Mazara del Vallo motorway (Salemi or Castelvetrano exit). The nearest airport is Trapani-Birgi; alternatively, use the Palermo "Falcone-Borsellino" airport.
The festival route winds through Piazza Libertà and Via Garibaldi, in the historic center of Santa Ninfa.
Admission to the event is free; tastings are paid for at individual stands. Free parking areas are available for campers, coaches, and motorcycles.
Check the dates and the updated program on the official channels of the Municipality of Santa Ninfa and the "Un Giorno da Pecora" Facebook page before setting off.
