About Belice Sheep Festival

Every autumn, Santa Ninfa, a village in the Trapani province in the heart of the Valle del Belice, dedicates an entire weekend to the Valle del Belice sheep breed and its derivatives. The "A Day as a Sheep" festival transforms Piazza Libertà and Via Garibaldi into a grand culinary trail, featuring arrosticini, boiled and roasted mutton, pasta with lamb ragù, couscous, and the famous local cheeses like the Vastedda della Valle del Belice PDO. Live music and a fairground area round out one of the most beloved gastronomic events in the Trapani area.

A festival dedicated to the Belice sheep

In the heart of the Valle del Belice, the town of Santa Ninfa (Province of Trapani, Sicily) hosts the Valle del Belice Sheep Festival every autumn, affectionately known as "A Day as a Sheep". The event is entirely dedicated to the indigenous Valle del Belice sheep breed, raised for centuries on these pastures, and the many products derived from it: meat, milk, and cheese. It is an appointment that weaves together gastronomy, pastoral tradition, and local identity, drawing thousands of visitors from all over Western Sicily every year.

A culinary journey between Piazza Libertà and Via Garibaldi

The 17th-century historic center of Santa Ninfa turns into a large gastronomic village. Along Piazza Libertà and Via Garibaldi, stands, exhibition spaces, and covered dining areas are set up to sample sheep meat specialties. Key dishes include sheep arrosticini, stigghiola, boiled and roasted mutton, pasta with lamb and mutton ragù, couscous, soups, and local cheeses. Traditional Sicilian desserts like cannoli and cassatelle are also in abundance.

Vastedda della Valle del Belice PDO

The dairy heart of the festival is the Vastedda della Valle del Belice PDO, the only stretched-curd cheese made from sheep's milk, recognizable by its focaccia-like shape and fresh, delicate taste. The event is also an opportunity to discover the work of local breeders and shepherds up close, as they are the guardians of a prized sheep breed and knowledge passed down through generations.

Music, entertainment, and families

Beyond the tastings, the festival offers musical entertainment along the entire route and, in recent editions, free concerts by nationally renowned artists held in Piazza Libertà. For families, there is a fairground area dedicated to children, while those arriving from out of town can access free parking areas for campers, coaches, and motorcycles, a sign of the organizers' attention to an increasingly regional audience.

An autumn appointment in the Trapani area

Organized by the Municipality of Santa Ninfa in collaboration with local breeders, the festival is traditionally held in November and represents one of the most iconic food and wine events in the Valle del Belice. For those who want to experience authentic Sicily, far from the main tourist routes, "A Day as a Sheep" is the perfect occasion to savor the flavors of Sicilian pastoral life and enjoy the hospitality of a village in the Trapani province.
