Three days of peasant culture, poultry shows, and flavors of Val Ceno in Varano de' Melegari
The Val Ceno Agricultural Fair is one of the most heartfelt and attended events in the Municipality of Varano de' Melegari, in the Province of Parma, Emilia-Romagna. Every spring, usually in the first days of May, the town in the hills of Val Ceno comes alive for three days entirely dedicated to the countryside, agriculture, and the peasant roots of the territory. The event is organized by the AERAv Association (Emilia-Romagna Poultry Farmers Association) together with the Pro Loco of Varano de' Melegari, and for many years has attracted over 20,000 visitors, confirming itself as one of the most representative agricultural fairs in the Parma Apennines.
The heart of the fair is the large poultry show curated by AERAv, with exhibitions of farm bird breeds, alongside exhibitions of livestock and farm animals. There are also tractor parades and an exhibition of ancient and modern agricultural machinery, which tell the story of the evolution of work in the fields. The fair is a precious opportunity to rediscover the crafts and knowledge of rural tradition, in an authentic and family-friendly setting.
In addition to the exhibition part, the Val Ceno Agricultural Fair offers a rich entertainment program: live music and shows that accompany each day, games and horsemen, spectacular lumberjack competitions, as well as activities and workshops designed for children. To complete the experience, there are wine and cheese tastings, numerous food stands with traditional dishes, and stalls selling typical products and local crafts. The historic Festa ed l'Anulèn, a twin event linked to the popular traditions of Val Ceno, also accompanies the fair.
Varano de' Melegari is also known for its famous racetrack and the presence of the Dallara Racing Team, but during the fair, it's the agricultural and peasant dimension that takes center stage. The event, with its free admission, represents an ideal opportunity to spend a day outdoors in the Parma hills, discovering the typical products, traditions, and hospitality of Val Ceno.
The 2026 edition, the XXVI according to the organizing Association AERAv, was held in Varano de' Melegari from Friday, May 1st to Sunday, May 3rd. For three days, the hills of Val Ceno hosted the usual fair program, focused on peasant culture and free admission.
