About Uva e Dintorni

Every first weekend of September, the historic centers of Avio and Sabbionara, in the heart of the Trentino Vallagarina, transform into a medieval village to celebrate the grape harvest. Uva e Dintorni combines culinary courtyards featuring local flavors, street performances, craft markets, wine tastings, and the famous Palio delle Botti between the Cities of Wine, where teams compete by pushing barrels uphill. An event supported by over 400 volunteers and a stage of the National Palio of the Cities of Wine.

A harvest festival between tradition and the Middle Ages

Uva e Dintorni and the Palio delle Botti is the grand grape harvest festival that brings the Municipality of Avio to life every year during the first weekend of September. Located in the Vallagarina valley, at the southern tip of the province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige), the event alternates between the town of Avio and the hamlet of Sabbionara d'Avio, nestled at the foot of Monte Baldo along the Adige River in one of southern Trentino's most renowned wine-growing areas.

For three days, the historic center dresses up for the occasion: alleys, courtyards, and squares become a medieval-themed stage, featuring re-enactments of ancient crafts, thematic pageants, drummers, and street performers. It is an authentic celebration of the valley's rural identity, where wine and the land have been the lifeblood of the community for centuries.

Culinary courtyards and tastings

The gastronomic heart of the festival lies in the culinary courtyards, set up within the historic spaces of the village, where visitors can sample traditional Trentino dishes paired with local wines. The event also features guided tours of the vineyards and local wineries, wine tastings hosted by Vallagarina producers, and craft markets that fill the town center.

  • Culinary courtyards with traditional Trentino products
  • Vallagarina wine tastings and winery tours
  • Medieval market and ancient crafts
  • Street performances, music, and thematic pageants
  • Guided tours of the vineyards and local cultural sites

The Palio delle Botti between the Cities of Wine

The most anticipated moment is the Palio delle Botti, a competition featuring numerous Cities of Wine from across Italy. Teams battle for victory in four challenges: pushing the barrel uphill, a slalom race between cones, grape treading, and filling the barrel. The Avio Palio is a stage of the National Palio of the Cities of Wine and attracts delegations from various Italian regions every year.

A festival built by volunteers

Uva e Dintorni owes its success to the dedication of over 400 volunteers from the town and surrounding areas who bring the event to life each year. Organized by the Uva e Dintorni Committee with the support of the Municipality of Avio and the Vallagarina Community, the event is now a staple of the Trentino autumn and a key reference point for promoting the region's viticultural heritage.
