The grape harvest festival and Palio delle Botti in the villages of Avio
Uva e Dintorni and the Palio delle Botti is the grand grape harvest festival that brings the Municipality of Avio to life every year during the first weekend of September. Located in the Vallagarina valley, at the southern tip of the province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige), the event alternates between the town of Avio and the hamlet of Sabbionara d'Avio, nestled at the foot of Monte Baldo along the Adige River in one of southern Trentino's most renowned wine-growing areas.
For three days, the historic center dresses up for the occasion: alleys, courtyards, and squares become a medieval-themed stage, featuring re-enactments of ancient crafts, thematic pageants, drummers, and street performers. It is an authentic celebration of the valley's rural identity, where wine and the land have been the lifeblood of the community for centuries.
The gastronomic heart of the festival lies in the culinary courtyards, set up within the historic spaces of the village, where visitors can sample traditional Trentino dishes paired with local wines. The event also features guided tours of the vineyards and local wineries, wine tastings hosted by Vallagarina producers, and craft markets that fill the town center.
The most anticipated moment is the Palio delle Botti, a competition featuring numerous Cities of Wine from across Italy. Teams battle for victory in four challenges: pushing the barrel uphill, a slalom race between cones, grape treading, and filling the barrel. The Avio Palio is a stage of the National Palio of the Cities of Wine and attracts delegations from various Italian regions every year.
Uva e Dintorni owes its success to the dedication of over 400 volunteers from the town and surrounding areas who bring the event to life each year. Organized by the Uva e Dintorni Committee with the support of the Municipality of Avio and the Vallagarina Community, the event is now a staple of the Trentino autumn and a key reference point for promoting the region's viticultural heritage.
The 2026 edition of Uva e Dintorni and the Palio delle Botti is confirmed in Avio (Trentino-Alto Adige) for September 4, 5, and 6, 2026. This is the 25th edition, an anniversary dedicated to the memory of Walter Pericolosi, the historic president of the Committee who passed away in 2026.
The historic center will return to its medieval atmosphere with culinary courtyards, wine tastings, a craft market, street performances, and thematic pageants. The Palio delle Botti between the Cities of Wine is scheduled for Sunday, September 6 at 2:30 PM, with teams competing in the classic four challenges.
The detailed program with times and appointments is currently being published on the official website of the event.
