About Urbansnacht Terlano

Every May 25th, Terlano celebrates St. Urban, the patron saint of winemakers, with the Urbansnacht, or St. Urban's Night. As part of the South Tyrol Wine Road's 'WeinFrühling' (Wine Spring) festival, the evening begins with a mass and the blessing of the vineyards at the Ansitz Köstenholz chapel, followed by the opening of local cellars, where visitors can enjoy famous Terlano white wines and South Tyrolean culinary specialties in a convivial atmosphere.

A night dedicated to the patron saint of wine

The Urbansnacht, or St. Urban's Night, is one of the most cherished events in the food and wine calendar of Terlano (Terlan), a municipality in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, in Trentino-South Tyrol. The festival is held every year on May 25th, the day dedicated to St. Urban, the traditional patron saint of winemakers and protector of the vines. In a region like Terlano, where white wine is central to the town's identity, this tradition blends religious observance with wine culture in an evening that draws locals and visitors alike along the South Tyrol Wine Road.

Blessing of the vineyards and cellar openings

The evening kicks off at 6:00 PM with a votive mass in the chapel of Ansitz Köstenholz: during the service, prayers are offered for good weather, followed by the blessing of the vineyards, a ritual deeply rooted in local farming culture. Afterward, from approximately 7:00 PM, the cellars of Terlano and Settequerce (Siebeneich) open their doors to offer tastings.

  • Ansitz Köstenholz (Margarethenweg)
  • Ansitz Lehenegg
  • Sektkellerei Stocker / Weinmesserhof (Kirchgasse)

Participating producers include Cantina Terlano (Kellerei Terlan), Weingut Kornell, Wein- & Sektkellerei von Braunbach, Weingut Leya, Weingut Kiemberger, and Sektgut Stocker, all showcasing local still and sparkling wines.

Wines and South Tyrolean specialties

The undisputed star is the famous Terlaner, the fruity white wine that brought fame to the town, accompanied by sparkling wines produced using the traditional method. To pair with the wines, South Tyrolean culinary specialties are served along the village streets. The refreshments are organized by the Südtiroler Bauernjugend (South Tyrolean Rural Youth) of Terlano-Vilpiano-Settequerce, highlighting the event's strong roots in the local community.

A WeinFrühling event

The Urbansnacht is part of the WeinFrühling (Wine Spring), a series of events that brings the villages of the South Tyrol Wine Road to life every year between April and May with tastings, cellar tours, and widespread festivities. Terlano, located between Bolzano and Merano, is one of the most renowned wine-growing areas in the region: attending St. Urban's Night is a unique opportunity to experience South Tyrolean winemaking tradition in an authentic, community-driven setting.
