About Uphill Bozen-Jenesien

The Uphill Bozen-Jenesien is an uphill running race connecting Bolzano to the village center of San Genesio Atesino, in the province of Bolzano (South Tyrol). It features 4 kilometers of pure vertical gain, climbing 785 meters from the valley station of the San Genesio cable car to the town square, passing by Castel Rafenstein on one of the steepest roads in Europe. Organized by the Soltnflitzer section of ASV Jenesien, it combines a timed competition with a "Just for Fun" category open to all enthusiasts.

A breathtaking climb above Bolzano

The Uphill Bozen-Jenesien is one of the most iconic uphill races in South Tyrol. The race starts at the valley station of the San Genesio cable car in Bolzano, at an altitude of approximately 305 meters, and immediately tackles an asphalt stretch that winds through vineyards up to the ruins of Castel Rafenstein, a passage known as one of the steepest roads in Europe. From there, the route continues uphill toward San Genesio Atesino, alternating between concrete sections, forest trails, and meadows, until reaching the finish line in the town square.

Vertical race stats

The course measures approximately 4 kilometers with a positive elevation gain of about 785 meters: a distance-to-gradient ratio that challenges even the most trained athletes while offering spectacular views of the Dolomites and the city of Bolzano along the way. The race takes place in the evening, creating a suggestive atmosphere as the city lights begin to twinkle while runners gain altitude.

Two ways to participate

  • Timed Race: Reserved for adult athletes with a valid competitive medical certificate.
  • Just for Fun: A non-timed category, requiring no competitive certificate, designed for those who want to experience the climb without the pressure of the clock.

Participants enjoy luggage transport from the start in Bolzano to the finish line, as well as access to changing rooms, facilities, and showers upon arrival.

Organizers

The event is organized by the Soltnflitzer section of ASV Jenesien Raiffeisen, a group rooted in the Tschögglberg plateau and united by a passion for movement, nature, and community. The race was established in 2012, initially as a 12-hour event, before adopting its current single-climb format in 2016, earning a permanent spot on the regional running calendar of the Municipality of San Genesio Atesino and South Tyrol.

A race pack with local flavor

Registered participants receive a curated race pack featuring regional products, and the finish line rewards include high-quality prizes sourced from local farmers—a perfect way to link the sporting challenge to the agricultural and mountain identity of the Tschögglberg.
