The historic September fair in the heart of Arezzo
The Mestolo Fair is one of the most deeply rooted events in the calendar of the Municipality of Arezzo, in Tuscany. It takes place every year in September, occupying the streets of the historic center near the Eden parking area for three days, spanning via Spinello, via Guadagnoli, via Niccolò Aretino, and the lower part of via Margaritone. Its curious name tells an ancient story, tied to the agricultural cycle and the work of the fields.
The fair originated as an event held just before the start of the grape harvest: on that occasion, the rural population around Arezzo would come to the city to renew their agricultural tools and utensils needed for grape picking. Among these, wooden ladles (mestoli) and wicker items were essential, eventually lending their name to the event. Even today, alongside more modern stalls, vendors of baskets, wooden objects, and traditional ladles—the true symbol of this fair—continue to thrive.
Over the decades, the Mestolo Fair has evolved into a large market that brings products, flavors, and food and wine specialties from all over Italy to Arezzo. Along the route, you will find:
For the people of Arezzo, the Mestolo Fair is much more than a market: it is an end-of-summer ritual that attracts thousands of visitors from the city and the province of Arezzo. The event requires a significant reorganization of traffic, with the closure of the Eden parking area and numerous streets in the center, a sign of its scale and importance to the territory. Strolling among the stalls, tasting porchetta or a sweet, and browsing through wooden ladles has been, for generations, a way for locals to bid farewell to summer and welcome autumn.
The 2026 Mestolo Fair takes place in Arezzo from Wednesday, September 9th, to Friday, September 11th, 2026, confirming the traditional early autumn appointment. The area involved includes via Margaritone (up to the intersection with via Crispi), via Guadagnoli, via Niccolò Aretino, via Spinello, Arena Eden, and via Signorelli. As every year, hundreds of stalls with products of all kinds from all over Italy are expected. The fair is free and open to everyone.
The detailed program (final number of stalls and layout along the route) is defined by the municipal administration in the days leading up to the event. Based on recent editions, the fair occupies the historic center for three days with stalls dedicated to:
Stall assignment operations for street vendors are held at the Informagiovani office in Piazza Sant'Agostino: Wednesday, September 9th, registration from 7:20 AM and choice of pitch from 8:15 AM; Thursday, September 10th, and Friday, September 11th, registration from 7:30 AM and choice from 7:45 AM.
The fair is held in the historic center of Arezzo, in the area including the Eden parking area (Arena Eden), via Spinello, via Guadagnoli, via Niccolò Aretino, and the lower part of via Margaritone.
Arezzo is easily accessible by train (Arezzo station on the Florence-Rome line) and by car via the A1 motorway, Arezzo exit. During the fair, numerous traffic changes and parking bans are in effect in the area: the Eden parking area remains closed, so it is advisable to use outer parking lots and reach the center on foot.
Access to the fair is free and open to the public.
