About The Mango Routes

At the end of August, Balestrate, a small seaside village on the Gulf of Castellammare in the province of Palermo, transforms into Italy's mango capital with Tropicalia — The Mango Routes. For a few days, the town center comes alive with tastings of fresh and processed mango, cooking shows, masterclasses, conferences on Sicilian tropical agriculture, and visits to local orchards. The event concludes with the famous Summer Carnival, featuring floats and Brazilian dancers coloring the streets. A free event that blends taste, culture, and popular celebration.

Tropicalia — The Mango Routes: The Tropical Flavor of Sicily

In Balestrate, a town in the province of Palermo overlooking the Gulf of Castellammare, Tropicalia — The Mango Routes takes place every late August, celebrating one of the most surprising revolutions in Sicilian agriculture: the cultivation of tropical fruits. Balestrate is considered one of the mango capitals of Sicily, thanks to a mild microclimate and fertile soil that have allowed numerous local farms to successfully focus on mangoes, avocados, and other exotic crops.

A Festival of Taste, Culture, and Research

Tropicalia is not just a food festival: it is an event that weaves together gastronomy, scientific outreach, and popular tradition. Throughout the event, there are conferences dedicated to the development of tropical agriculture, organized under the patronage of the University of Palermo, cooking shows with well-known chefs, masterclasses on spirits and desserts made with mango, and naturally, plenty of tastings of fresh mango and processed products like jams, juices, and pastries.

  • Guided tours of mango orchards, organized by the Terre delle Balestrate cooperative
  • Conferences and round tables on Sicilian tropical agriculture
  • Food and wine cooking shows and masterclasses
  • Tastings of fresh mango and processed products
  • Live music and street entertainment throughout the town center

The Summer Carnival

The most anticipated and spectacular moment is the Summer Carnival, a grand parade that closes the event with floats, dance troupes, Brazilian-style dancers, and live bands. Organized by the III Millennio association, the Summer Carnival brings tropical colors and rhythms to the streets, turning Balestrate into an open-air party that attracts visitors from all over the province of Palermo and Sicily.

A Project for the Territory

Promoted by the Municipality of Balestrate together with the Pro Loco, the Terre delle Balestrate cooperative, and with the involvement of the University of Palermo, the event aims to enhance Sicilian tropical supply chains and offer opportunities to young people who choose to invest in their land. An appointment that tells the story of an innovative and welcoming Sicily, where farming tradition meets the new frontiers of agriculture.
