The Trofarello Carnival featuring the masks Madama Griota and Monsù Brichet
The Trofarello Carnival is the signature carnival event in Trofarello, a town located in the southern outskirts of Turin, in the Metropolitan City of Turin, Piedmont. It is a simple and genuine local folk festival, organized by the Trofarello Parents' Committee (CGT) in collaboration with the Municipality, the Alpini Group, the Red Cross, and local historical groups. The event takes place at the Alpini Group headquarters on Viale della Resistenza and transforms the town into a "children's city" for a day: a colorful event designed for the little ones, but one that engages adults as well.
At the heart of the Trofarello tradition are the two local masks, Madama Griota and Monsù Brichet, which are deeply rooted in the town's history. Monsù Brichet recalls the historic production of matches (the "brichet" in Piedmontese dialect) that once defined Trofarello, while Madama Griota refers to the black cherry (the "griotta"), the typical product for which the town is still known today. The investiture of the masks is the most anticipated moment of the event: the ceremony, led by the Gastaldo, welcomes numerous historical and carnival groups from various parts of Piedmont, alongside the Alpini Group and the Counts Vagnone of Trofarello.
In addition to the ceremonial aspects, the Carnival offers moments of conviviality and play: a lunch featuring traditional polenta and sausage, a Carnival bingo specifically designed for children, and an afternoon of games, inflatables, and a final snack. Every year, the municipal administration emphasizes the importance of preserving and passing on these traditions, fostering the involvement of new generations in historical re-enactments and the local carnival.
Part of the wider landscape of carnivals in the Province of Turin and Piedmont, the Trofarello Carnival does not focus on large allegorical floats, but rather on a community and family-oriented dimension, characterized by iconic masks, traditional flavors, and fun for children. It is an opportunity to discover an authentic corner of the Piedmontese Carnival, far from the more tourist-heavy events and close to the original spirit of a village festival.
The 2026 edition of the Trofarello Carnival brought life to Trofarello on Sunday, February 22, 2026, organized by the Trofarello Parents' Committee together with the Municipality, the Alpini Group, and the Red Cross. A "vibrant" day dedicated to tradition and family fun, with the historic masks Madama Griota and Monsù Brichet as the stars of the festival at the Alpini headquarters on Viale della Resistenza.
The investiture ceremony, led by Gastaldo Ermanno Ubertino, welcomed numerous historical and carnival groups from various parts of Piedmont, along with the Trofarello Alpini Group and the Counts Vagnone of Trofarello Group.
The Trofarello Carnival is traditionally held in winter, during the Carnival season. The 2026 edition took place on Sunday, February 22, 2026.
