The climber's challenge across the three slopes of Monte Serra
The Trittico del Serra is one of the most beloved events for climbing enthusiasts in the province of Pisa. It is a non-competitive cycling rally, a true test for climbers that involves tackling all three bike-accessible slopes of Monte Serraโthe highest peak of the Monti Pisaniโin a single day. The event starts in the town of Calci, in the heart of the province of Pisa, Tuscany, and gathers hundreds of cyclists each year ready to face the area's toughest gradients.
The charm of the Trittico lies in the challenge of its three ascents, each with a distinct character:
In total, the full route spans approximately 57 kilometers with over 2,400 meters of elevation gain. Those who prefer not to tackle the entire trilogy can choose to climb just once (approx. 13 km) or twice (approx. 34 km): the event is designed to welcome cyclists of all levels, from the trained amateur to those simply wanting to enjoy the mountains.
The meeting point is Piazza Garibaldi, in the center of Calci, with morning registration typically open between 7:30 and 8:15 AM. The start is free-form (ร la franรงaise), and participants have until the early afternoon to complete the loop. Those who finish all three climbs receive the climber's diploma, a symbolic recognition celebrating their achievement on the Monti Pisani.
The Trittico del Serra is more than just a sporting challenge; it is an opportunity to discover a picturesque corner of the province of Pisa. Calci is famous for its monumental Certosa, an ancient monastic complex that now houses the Natural History Museum of the University of Pisa. By pedaling between Calci, Sant'Andrea di Compito, and Buti, cyclists traverse villages, olive groves, and forests that make the Monti Pisani one of the most appreciated destinations for cycling tourism in Tuscany.
Organized by enthusiasts in the spirit of amateur cycling, the event has grown over time to become a mid-June classic, even attracting big names in cycling as guests of honor.
The 2026 edition of the Trittico del Serra, the twentieth, was held on Sunday, June 14, 2026. The meeting point and morning registration were in Piazza Garibaldi in Calci, between 7:30 and 8:15 AM, with a free-form start and a maximum time to complete the three climbs set for the early afternoon.
The guest of honor for the event was Fabiana Luperini, one of the greatest Italian cyclists of all time, a multi-award winner at the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France, whose presence added further prestige to the twenty-year milestone.
The full route included the three slopes of Monte Serra โ Calci, Sant'Andrea di Compito, and Buti โ for a total of approximately 57 km and over 2,400 meters of elevation gain, with the option to tackle one or two climbs for those seeking a more moderate challenge.
Sunday, June 14, 2026 โ Meeting and registration in Piazza Garibaldi in Calci (7:30-8:15 AM). Free-form start for the full route (three climbs, 57 km) or for the reduced variants of one or two ascents. Climber's diploma for those who complete the trilogy. Guest of honor: Fabiana Luperini.
Calci is located a few kilometers from Pisa, along the slopes of the Monti Pisani. By car, it is easily reached from Pisa or Lucca; by train, the reference station is Pisa Centrale, from where you can continue by car or local connections. The meeting point is Piazza Garibaldi, in the town center.
Registration is done online via the official website (discounted early-bird rate) or on the morning of the event in the square at a higher rate. Fitness for cycling activities is required according to the organization's guidelines.
An efficient road bike and gears suitable for climbing are strongly recommended, given the steepness of the slopes. Bring water bottles, supplements, and clothing suitable for mountain temperature fluctuations. For those coming from afar, Pisa and Lucca offer numerous accommodation options nearby.
