The trail running race in the Apuan Alps, Pescaglia
The Piglione Trail is one of the most beloved trail running races in Northern Tuscany. It takes place in Pescaglia, in the province of Lucca, with its base at the sports field in the village of San Rocco in Turrite, which serves as the start and finish point for all routes. The event is organized by ASD Aics Val di Turrite with the patronage of the Municipality of Pescaglia, and over time it has become a staple of the autumn running calendar, attracting athletes from all over Italy and abroad.
The heart of the Piglione Trail lies in its three loop courses along the ridges of the Apuan Alps:
All tracks reach Monte Prana and Monte Piglione, the iconic peak of the race, from which the view reaches the Versilia coast on clear days. The trails wind through the villages and forests of the municipality—from Pascoso to Convalle, from Gello to Piazzanello—in the heart of autumn, when the colors of the Apuan Alps create unforgettable landscapes.
The Piglione Trail is more than just a race: it is a way to discover an off-the-beaten-path corner of Tuscany, filled with mountain villages, chestnut groves, and ancient mule tracks. The Val di Turrite, in the municipality of Pescaglia—home to composer Giacomo Puccini, who was born in nearby Celle dei Puccini—offers athletes and their companions an authentic experience, far from the most crowded destinations. Environmental awareness is part of the event's identity: plastic cups are banned along the routes, and every competitor must carry their own eco-cup or water bottle.
Those who run the Piglione Trail often talk about the atmosphere: aid stations managed by volunteers in mountain huts and cabins, the warmth of the small villages passed through, and the celebration at the finish line. A Finisher medal awaits everyone who completes their distance within the time limit, in a day that combines sport, nature, and community.
The seventh edition of the Piglione Trail returns on Sunday, October 18, 2026, with its base at the sports field in San Rocco in Turrite, Pescaglia. The three-distance format is confirmed, all loop courses on the ridges of the Apuan Alps up to Monte Piglione. The Ultra and Long races are qualifying events for the UTMB 50K circuit, while the Short 20K remains the ideal gateway for those new to trail running.
The three distances start at staggered times from the same sports field:
Prizes for the top 3 men and top 3 women overall in each distance, plus age-group categories. Finisher medal for all those who complete the race within the time limit. No cash prizes.
To complete the weekend, the Piglione Vertical (6 km, 930 m elevation gain, max 100 bibs) will also take place on Saturday, October 4.
The meeting point is the sports field in San Rocco in Turrite, a village in Pescaglia (LU). By car, it can be reached from Lucca by going up the Serchio Valley and the Val di Turrite; the most convenient motorway exit is Lucca Est (A11). The reference train station is Lucca, from where you can continue by car.
Online registration via dedicated platforms (ENDU). Bib collection is on Saturday from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Pescaglia Town Hall (Via Roma 2) and on Sunday morning at the sports field. An identity document, a competitive medical certificate, and a signed waiver are required.
Hydration pack or water bottles (at least 1 liter), thermal blanket, whistle, windbreaker, food supplies, eco-cup, charged mobile phone, trail shoes; headlamp is mandatory for the Ultra.
Aid stations along the routes and awards ceremony at the finish line. It is recommended to book accommodation in the Pescaglia and Garfagnana area well in advance.
