The masked parade that enlivens the Apennine village of Parma
The Traveling Carnival of Bardi is one of the most cherished events of the winter in the upper Ceno Valley, in the heart of the Apennines in the province of Parma. Unlike large carnivals with fixed grandstands and stages, here the festival moves: the parade crosses the streets of the historic center of the village, dominated by the imposing Landi castle, involving every corner of the town. As the spirit of the event states, it is not a carnival to be watched, but one to be experienced.
The strength of this carnival lies in popular participation. Every year, hundreds of costumed participants take to the streets, with masked groups and floats arriving not only from Bardi but from all the surrounding areas: from the Noveglia Valley to Varsi, from Bore to Farini, up to nearby Morfasso and the Piacenza area. The themes of the costumes are varied and imaginative, a sign of preparation that engages communities for weeks. The parade concludes with the presentation of all the masked groups, the customary photos, and the distribution of gadgets to the participants.
Live music and entertainment always accompany the procession, warming up the atmosphere along the entire route. The gastronomic part is unmissable, an authentic hallmark of the Apennine village festivals: the volunteers of the Pro Loco of Bardi prepare fritters, donuts, and typical carnival sweets, while the Alpine Group warms up the day with mulled wine and sausage sandwiches.
The Municipality of Bardi, in Emilia-Romagna, extends over one of the largest territories in the province of Parma, at an altitude of over 600 meters, with dozens of hamlets and villages scattered among woods and valleys. Its symbol is the famous Castle of Bardi, one of the best-preserved fortresses in the Apennines. The Traveling Carnival is the perfect opportunity to discover this authentic mountain corner in a festive way, amidst colors, joy, and local flavors.
The Traveling Carnival of Bardi 2026 took place on Sunday, February 15th, confirming the traveling formula that unites adults and children along the village streets. Floats and masked groups met at 2:00 PM at the former sports field before starting the parade at 2:30 PM.
