On Christmas Eve, the village of Val Trebbia relives the Nativity
Every year, on Christmas Eve, the historic village of Travo dims its ordinary lights to ignite with ancient magic. In the Municipality of Travo, in the province of Piacenza (Emilia-Romagna), the Living Nativity in the Historic Village reenacts the birth of Jesus, transforming the village streets and courtyards into a small Bethlehem. It is one of the most heartfelt living Nativity scenes in the Piacenza Apennines, animated entirely by local volunteers with the support of the Municipality.
The scene comes to life in the courtyard below the Pieve di Sant'Antonino Martire, in Piazza Trieste, a particularly characteristic corner of the village that lends itself well to reliving the moment of the Nativity. About fifty participants—adults, teenagers, and children—portray the characters from the Gospel: King Herod with his queen and Roman centurions, Joseph and Mary seeking lodging, shepherds with their flocks, and announcing angels.
Along the route, the ancient crafts of the past are recreated: the carpenter, the blacksmith, the shoemaker, the washerwoman, as well as the inn where Joseph and Mary vainly sought hospitality. In a specially set-up grotto, there are the ox and donkey to warm the Holy Family, while a little further away, sheep graze with the shepherds.
The religious component is the highlight of the evening. At 10:00 PM, in the Pieve di Sant'Antonino Martire, a solemn Mass is celebrated, accompanied by choir songs directed by Maestro Remo Maggi. At the end of the service, the faithful are led in a procession by bagpipers Paolo Simonazzi and Emanuele Reverberi to the Nativity grotto, amidst Christmas carols that envelop the entire village.
Travo is a small town located on the left bank of the Trebbia River, about thirty kilometers from Piacenza, in the territory of the Apennines of the Four Provinces where the borders of Piacenza, Genoa, Alessandria, and Pavia meet. The Pieve di Sant'Antonino, dedicated to the town's patron saint, has its roots in the Middle Ages and serves as a natural backdrop for this reenactment, where the spiritual dimension of Christmas merges with the warmth of the local community.
The Living Nativity of Travo is a free event suitable for all ages, capable of conveying the most authentic sense of Christmas Eve: the silence of the village, the light of the torches, the period costumes, and the music of the bagpipes. A precious opportunity to experience Christmas away from the hustle and bustle, immersed in a popular tradition that is renewed year after year.
The Living Nativity in the Historic Village of Travo returns on the evening of Christmas Eve, December 24, 2026, as confirmed by the official village events calendar. This year again, the courtyard below the Pieve di Sant'Antonino Martire, in Piazza Trieste, will host the Nativity reenactment animated by Travo volunteers with the support of the Municipality.
The structure of the evening follows the established pattern: costumed figures, ancient crafts, the grotto with the ox and donkey, King Herod with the Roman centurions, the solemn Mass in the evening, and the final procession accompanied by bagpipers. The final details of the program (precise times and names of celebrants) will be communicated by the organizers in the weeks preceding the event.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition will be confirmed by the organizers closer to the event. The evening traditionally follows this structure:
Travo is located in Val Trebbia, about 27 km from Piacenza. By car, it can be reached from the SS45 Piacenza-Genoa, following the signs for Travo along the valley. The nearest train station is Piacenza, from which you can continue by car or local transport.
The performance takes place on the evening of December 24th. The costumed figures animate the village starting around 8:30 PM; the solemn Mass is celebrated at 10:00 PM, followed by the procession to the grotto.
Admission is free. The event takes place outdoors in the historic village: warm clothing and comfortable shoes are recommended for the cobbled streets.
