The poetry prize of Pecorara, cultural heart of Val Tidone
The Valtidoncello Poetry Competition is one of the longest-running and most beloved cultural events in the upper Val Tidone. It is held in Pecorara, a hamlet that has always been considered the "capital" of the Tidoncello valley and which today is part of the municipality of Alta Val Tidone, in the province of Piacenza (Emilia-Romagna). Now in its 38th edition in 2026, the prize is organized by the Pro Loco of Pecorara, with the patronage of the Municipality of Alta Val Tidone and the support of Banca di Piacenza, present since the first edition.
Over almost forty years, the competition has grown and matured: from the simpler verses of its origins, it has evolved into compositions that explore inner life, introspection, self-analysis, and reflection on one's being and destiny. The participating poets bring their intimate and contemporary thoughts, sharing feelings, passions, sufferings, ideals, and disappointments. It is poetry that speaks to today's person, far from clichés, capable of moving those who listen on the award day.
The Valtidoncello welcomes authors of all ages, from the youngest to the oldest, and is divided into several sections:
In addition to these, there are special awards presented annually. The jury, chaired by the writer Umberto Fava since the prize's inception, evaluates the compositions and proclaims the winners and finalists during the ceremony.
The award ceremony usually takes place in the Playground of Pecorara, along Via Cesare Battisti, outdoors and with free admission; in case of bad weather, the event moves to the former parish hall. It is an event that unites the valley community and the many authors who, year after year, choose to entrust their verses to this small but significant prize in the Piacenza Apennines. The competition is part of the rich calendar of events that animate the upper Val Tidone, blending roots, tradition, and culture.
The 38th edition of the Valtidoncello Poetry Competition will be held in Pecorara (Alta Val Tidone) on Sunday, September 13, 2026, confirmed in the 2026 events calendar for the upper Val Tidone. The event maintains its usual format: the outdoor award ceremony, the three sections (adults, "Andrea Di Muzio" youth, primary school children), and special prizes, with the historic jury led by writer Umberto Fava.
The details of the award ceremony on September 13, 2026 (finalist poems, winners, and special prizes) will be announced in the weeks preceding the event, after the jury has evaluated the compositions. To participate in the competition, submit your poems according to the regulations published by the Pro Loco of Pecorara.
The day traditionally follows this schedule:
The proclamation of the overall winner of the adult section and the awarding of special prizes are the most anticipated moments of the day. Admission is free and open to all.
The award ceremony takes place in Pecorara, a hamlet of the municipality of Alta Val Tidone (PC), in the Playground on Via Cesare Battisti. In case of bad weather, the event will be moved to the former parish hall.
By car from Piacenza, you can reach the upper Val Tidone by driving up the valley towards Nibbiano and Pecorara (about an hour's drive). The area is hilly and in the Apennines: a car is recommended, as public transport is limited.
The award ceremony is free and open to all. For information on the rules, sections, and how to submit compositions, please contact the Pro Loco of Pecorara or the Municipality of Alta Val Tidone (tel. +39 0523 993711).
