About Living Nativity of Rivalta

Every December 24th, on Christmas Eve, the ancient village of Rivalta (Municipality of Gazzola, in the province of Piacenza) becomes the stage for one of the most evocative living Nativity scenes in Emilia-Romagna. Over 100 participants re-enact the Nativity and about thirty ancient crafts along alleys lit by torches and braziers, culminating in the arrival of Mary and Joseph with the donkey and the midnight Mass. A tradition born in 1990, with free admission by donation.

A Little Bethlehem at the Foot of the Castle

On Christmas Eve, the medieval village of Rivalta โ€” a hamlet in the Municipality of Gazzola, in the province of Piacenza โ€” switches off modern lights and relights with the flame of torches and braziers. It is the Living Nativity in the Village of Rivalta, one of the most beloved re-enactments of the Nativity in Emilia-Romagna, which for over thirty years has drawn visitors from all over the Trebbia Valley and the Piacenza area.

The ancient settlement nestled at the foot of Rivalta Castle, with its stone alleys and arcades, naturally lends itself to becoming a little Bethlehem: without artificial sets, the village itself serves as the living stage.

Over 100 Participants and Thirty Ancient Crafts

More than 100 participants bring the re-enactment to life, portraying not only the Holy Family but an entire village from two thousand years ago. Along the streets, you'll encounter representatives of about thirty ancient crafts: carpenters, blacksmiths, potters, poultry sellers, decorators, weavers, spinners, and many other figures, illuminated in the alleys by the warm glow of torches.

The narrative follows the classic stages of the Gospel story: the entrance of the shepherds and artisans into the village, the procession of the High Priest, the departure of King Herod's procession from the castle, the Census Taker heading to the census location, and finally the arrival of Mary and Joseph with the donkey. All characters then proceed to the church for the midnight Mass, followed by adoration of the Nativity scene.

A Tradition Born in 1990

The Living Nativity of Rivalta was born in 1990, inspired by the first Nativity scene created by Saint Francis in Greccio in 1223. It is organized by the association Il Grumo APS, with the involvement of volunteers from the parish, the castle owners, and numerous village inhabitants. It is a community project that grows and renews each year, maintaining the solemn and intimate spirit of Christmas Eve.

Atmosphere and Hospitality

During the evening, mulled wine, hot tea, herbal tea prepared by the village herbalist, and Palestinian bread baked by the village bakers are offered: small gestures of hospitality that warm the long wait in the cold winter night. Spectators are advised to dress modestly, suitable for the solemn nature of the event. Admission is free, by donation.

The Living Nativity is part of the event calendar of the Municipality of Gazzola and the Castles of the Duchy circuit, and it is one of the most characteristic Christmas events in the entire province of Piacenza.
