About Tractor Drivers' Saturday

Every May in Pietraperzia, deep in the heart of the Enna hinterland, around sixty festively decorated tractors make their way to the Sanctuary of Maria Santissima della Cava, carrying hundreds of devotees on their trailers. The "Tractor Drivers' Saturday" is a three-day celebration of faith and rural tradition, featuring processions with the Palio, a pilgrimage, Holy Mass, and spectacular fireworks. It is an authentic folk festival, deeply rooted in the town's agricultural identity and the cult of the Madonna della Cava, the patron saint of tractor drivers.

A celebration of rural devotion in the heart of Sicily

The Tractor Drivers' Saturday is one of the most heartfelt religious and folk events in Pietraperzia, a town in the province of Enna, in the heart of the Sicilian hinterland. Every year in May, about sixty festively decorated tractors, with hundreds of faithful packed onto their trailers, set off on a pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of Maria Santissima della Cava, in a procession that blends faith, agricultural identity, and community tradition.

Organization and roots

The event is promoted by the Maria Santissima della Cava Tractor Drivers' Association, led by Giuseppe Miraglia, with the spiritual support of Father Giovanni Bongiovanni, parish priest and rector of the sanctuary. The event celebrates the deep bond between the farming community of Pietraperzia and the cult of the Madonna della Cava: the tractor drivers, who have worked the lands of the Enna fiefdom for generations, entrust themselves to the protection of the Virgin, to whom they dedicate this collective vow.

A three-day event of processions and the Palio

The festival spans three days, marked by the rite of the Palio of the Madonna della Cava, the banner that is collected, carried in procession through the town streets, and kept by devoted families. Friday features the collection of the Palio and the first procession; Saturday, the main day, is dedicated to the tractor rally and the pilgrimage to the sanctuary, including the celebration of Holy Mass; Sunday concludes the event with a final evening procession.

The tractor pilgrimage

The most evocative moment is the ascent of the tractors toward the sanctuary: the agricultural vehicles, decorated and loaded with devotees, parade through the town streets in an atmosphere of popular celebration that draws hundreds of people. Upon arrival in front of the Sanctuary of Maria Santissima della Cava, Mass is celebrated, followed in the afternoon by a parade in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele.

Fireworks and closing

The event concludes with a twenty-minute fireworks display, launched from the old sports field on Viale Marconi, lighting up the sky of Pietraperzia after the final procession with the Palio. It is the seal on a festival that remains one of the most defining appointments in the calendar of the Municipality of Pietraperzia and the entire central Sicily.

A heritage of Sicilian tradition

Distinct from the similar "Truckers' Saturday," the Tractor Drivers' Saturday represents a living example of popular religiosity and Sicilian agricultural culture, where Marian faith and the craft of the land intertwine in a collective rite that is renewed from generation to generation.
