Honoring the memory of Abruzzo's emigration in the village of Tortoreto Alto
The Emigrant Day is one of the most heartfelt events of the summer in Tortoreto, a town on the Teramo coast in Abruzzo. Launched by the Associazione Amici di Tortoreto with municipal support, the event dedicates an entire day to the memory of Abruzzo's emigrationโa phenomenon that, starting in the late 19th century, touched nearly every local family, with departures for the Americas, Northern Europe, and Australia.
The day takes place in the historic center of Tortoreto Alto, the ancient medieval village perched on the hills overlooking the Adriatic. It is here, among the narrow streets and squares of the old town, that citizens, descendants of emigrants, and guests gather in an atmosphere that blends historical reflection with local conviviality.
The event's structure remains consistent year after year. The program begins with a photo exhibition that tells the stories of emigration linked to Tortoreto and Abruzzo through images. This is followed by a conference in the Town Hall, giving a voice to journalists, scholars, researchers, and direct witnesses invited to reflect on themes of emigration, integration, and the relationship between Abruzzo communities abroad and their land of origin. Recent speakers have included journalist and writer Dom Serafini, MIT Boston researcher Gigliola Staffilani, historian Tito Rubini, and anthropologist Fabiana Vagnoni, alongside representatives of the ANFE (National Association of Emigrant Families).
The day concludes with a communal lunch and, in the evening, a musical performance featuring traditional sounds. It is a way to turn memory into a celebration and to strengthen the ties of a community that continues to recognize itself in its roots.
Part of the rich summer calendar in Tortoreto, the Emigrant Day is more than just a commemorative event: it is a moment of collective identity that unites the Province of Teramo and all of Abruzzo around one of the most significant chapters of its history. For those visiting the Teramo coast in summer, it is an opportunity to discover the authentic face and deep memory of a village that has never forgotten its distant children.
The twentieth Emigrant Day in Tortoreto is scheduled for Sunday, July 19, 2026, in the historic center of Tortoreto Alto, as part of the summer calendar. An important milestone for the event organized by the Associazione Amici di Tortoreto, which has kept the memory of Abruzzo's emigration alive for twenty years.
The edition will feature the well-established structure: the photo exhibition dedicated to emigration stories, the conference in the Town Hall with journalists, researchers, and witnesses, the communal lunch, and the evening musical performance. The detailed program, including the names of speakers and guests, is usually announced in the weeks leading up to the event.
The full program for the 2026 edition will be published by the organizers during the month of July.
