About Torrepaduli Living Nativity

The Torrepaduli Living Nativity is one of the most evocative Nativity representations in Salento. Set within the 18th-century rooms of Palazzo Pasanisi, home to the Museum of Peasant Civilization in the village of Torrepaduli in Ruffano (Lecce province), it brings courtyards and alleys to life with dozens of actors, ancient crafts, and scenes of rural life. Organized by the 'Ettore Pasanisi' Senior Association, it takes place between Christmas and Epiphany by torchlight, accompanied by the flavors of the 'Piazza del Gusto'.

A living nativity in the heart of Salento

The Torrepaduli Living Nativity is one of the most beloved Christmas events in lower Salento. It takes place in the village of Torrepaduli, part of the municipality of Ruffano, in the province of Lecce, in the heart of Puglia. For over twenty years, the local community has transformed the village's historic center into a grand Nativity narrative, where religious tradition intertwines with the memory of Salento's rural life.

The setting: Palazzo Pasanisi and the Museum of Peasant Civilization

The representation is staged inside and around Palazzo Pasanisi, an elegant 18th-century residence that houses the Museum of Peasant Civilization of Torrepaduli. The ancient rooms, courtyards, and surrounding alleys become the natural backdrop for a historical-religious reconstruction curated down to the smallest detail. Instead of street lighting, torches are lit, enveloping the scenes in a warm, timeless atmosphere.

Actors, scenes, and ancient crafts

Dozens of actors in costume bring the route to life: from the Nativity hut to scenes of daily life, visitors walk through a village where the ancient crafts of Salento are revived. You will encounter the blacksmith, wool carders, the basket maker, the weaver, the knife grinder, the candle maker, and the potter, along with many other figures who reconstruct the economy and spirituality of the past. It is a true community heritage, capable of moving both adults and children.

The Piazza del Gusto

Alongside the nativity route, the Piazza del Gusto offers traditional Salento specialties: caciocavallo cheese, pucce bread, grilled dishes, pittule, cecamariti, and typical Christmas sweets. It is a perfect opportunity to combine the charm of the nativity with the authentic flavors of local cuisine.

Organization and tradition

The event is organized by the 'Ettore Pasanisi' Senior Association, which is dedicated to rediscovering and promoting local traditions, and is part of the wider Christmas program of the Municipality of Ruffano. The Torrepaduli Living Nativity confirms itself year after year as one of the most popular events in Salento, attracting visitors from all over the province of Lecce and Puglia.
