A night of love, music, and memories in the medieval village of Salemi
The Romantic Night in the Most Beautiful Villages of Italy is a national event that, for one evening in June, transforms Italian villages into romantic settings. In Salemi, an ancient town in the Belice Valley in the province of Trapani, Sicily, the initiative takes place along the illuminated cobblestone streets of the historic center, leading up to the majestic Norman-Swabian Castle that overlooks the village from its heights.
The event is promoted by the Most Beautiful Villages of Italy association, which invites its member municipalities to celebrate the same night with a shared theme each year. The 2026 edition is themed "Love for our villages, our memories, and the bond that unites us". In Salemi, the program is curated by the Department of Tourism and the Department of Social Policies of the City of Salemi, with the involvement of local associations—Pro Loco, Pro Centro Storico, folk groups, and local cultural organizations.
Recognized as one of the Most Beautiful Villages of Italy, Salemi preserves a historic center filled with local stone palaces, churches, the ancient Giudecca (Jewish quarter) and Rabato (Arab-origin quarter), and narrow alleys climbing up to the castle. It was from the cylindrical tower of the Norman-Swabian Castle in 1860 that Garibaldi raised the tricolor flag, symbolically proclaiming Salemi the "first Capital of Italy": a village where history, identity, and tradition intertwine at every step.
During the Romantic Night, the village's squares and balconies come alive with serenades, dances, poems, and toasts. City museums open for free, local venues host live music and DJ sets, while couples, families, and visitors stroll among the lights and decorated shop windows. The highlight is the midnight toast at the castle, with kisses and love songs under the sky of western Sicily.
The 2026 Romantic Night in Salemi enlivened the historic center throughout the evening of Saturday, June 20, from the afternoon until after midnight, under the theme "Love for our villages, our memories, and the bond that unites us". Initiatives included "Windows of Love," a dance performance in Piazza Libertà, serenades on the village balconies, free museum access, and live music in the center's venues. The evening concluded at the Norman-Swabian Castle with the midnight toast, kisses, and love songs.
The evening's entertainment also included a pastry workshop as part of the Donn'Arte project.
The dance show "Love for memories" in Piazza Libertà, the "Balconies of Love" serenades with the Folk Group "Nuova Sicilia Bedda," and the midnight toast at the Norman-Swabian Castle.
