Beach bonfires and the night procession in Marina di Vietri sul Mare
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Every year, there is one night when Marina di Vietri sul Mare refuses to sleep. It is the night between December 7th and 8th, the eve and solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. While the rest of Italy prepares for Christmas, this seaside village in the Municipality of Vietri sul Mare, in the province of Salerno, stays awake until dawn for the ritual of the bonfires. As the first town on the Amalfi Coast encountered when arriving from Salerno—world-famous for its polychrome ceramics—it transforms into a landscape of fire and light overlooking the gulf.
The Vietri bonfires have a specific name: treppieri, named for the three-legged base that supports the wood pile. These are not improvised heaps; the technique for building and lighting them has been passed down for generations, and for many local youths, participating in the construction of a treppiere is a rite of passage. In the days leading up to the festival, the tripods stand ready at strategic points in the Marina, waiting for the night.
The tradition, with ancient origins—some trace it back to the Byzantine-Roman era—is rooted in maritime life. It is said that the village women would light fires on the shore to guide their husbands back home from fishing at sea. Over time, this practical gesture became an act of devotion: today, the bonfires serve to illuminate the streets traveled by the Madonna, symbolically warming her and protecting the village.
In recent years, this popular ritual has been accompanied by an artistic project titled «The Path of Light», part of the UNESCOast — Amalfi Coast UNESCO Heritage program. It is a journey that winds from the sea to the church through four scenic tableaux, featuring torches, live music, dance, and storytelling. It is a narrative of the fishermen's spirituality and their bond with the Madonna, built on local legends and testimonies, culminating in the ascent to the church and the lighting of the bonfires. Access is free, subject to availability.
The heart of the festival follows a well-established script. From the evening of December 7th, Piazza Attilio Della Porta fills with food stalls and music. Shortly after midnight, the village prepares with bell-ringing, firecrackers, and the band. Around 2:00 AM, the Mass is held, followed by the solemn procession of the statue of the Immaculate Conception through the alleys of the Marina, while one by one, the treppieri are lit as the procession passes. The spectacle of the bonfires on the beach, with the flames reflecting on the water, continues until the early hours of the morning. On the morning of December 8th, the Historic Grand Concert Band of the City of Vietri sul Mare parades through the streets, while liturgical celebrations continue at the Parish of Santa Maria di Portosalvo and the churches of Sant'Antonio and San Francesco.
The Night of the Immaculate is also a night of taste. Stalls managed by the Vietri Restaurateurs Association offer typical products of the local maritime tradition, alongside the great classics of Campanian winter nights: zeppole fried on the spot and hot chocolate, essential for braving the late hours outdoors.
Vietri sul Mare is the first of the thirteen municipalities of the Amalfi Coast and one of the symbols of Campania's craftsmanship: its ceramics, documented since the 15th century, adorn domes, signs, and staircases in the town center. Participating in the Night of the Immaculate means seeing the village in its most authentic form, far from the summer crowds, when the community gathers around the fire and the sea that wrote its history.
As of the update of this page, the official dates and program for the 2026 edition of «The Night of the Immaculate - The Path of Light» in Marina di Vietri sul Mare, in the province of Salerno, have not yet been published. This is completely normal: in previous years, the schedule was presented in the second half of November.
The ritual of the treppieri, the bonfires lit as the Immaculate Conception procession passes, is a centuries-old tradition of the Vietri maritime community and is renewed every year. As soon as the Municipality of Vietri sul Mare, the Pro Loco, and the Vietri Restaurateurs Association release the program, this page will be updated with confirmed times, locations, and events.
Recurring elements of the event: confirmation for 2026 is awaited from the organizers.
Marina di Vietri is about 5 km from Salerno. By car: A3 Naples-Salerno motorway, exit Vietri sul Mare, then descend towards the Marina; during high season and festival nights, traffic is heavy and parking by the shore is very limited. By train: Salerno station, connected to the Marina by urban and suburban buses on the Amalfi Coast line. Nearest airports: Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi and Naples-Capodichino.
The heart of the event is Piazza Attilio Della Porta, in the village of Marina di Vietri, with the beach and surrounding alleys used for the bonfires and the procession. Religious celebrations are centered at the Parish of Santa Maria di Portosalvo.
Participation in the festival, bonfires, and procession is free. The «Path of Light» shows are free to enter until capacity is reached; tastings at food stalls are paid on-site.
Dress warmly, wear closed-toe shoes, and bring a flashlight or a fully charged phone: you will be outdoors for most of the night. Keep an eye on children near the bonfires and respect the barriers. If you plan to stay overnight, book well in advance between Vietri and Salerno: December 8th is a very popular long weekend.
