About The Magic of Christmas

In San Mango sul Calore, an Irpinian village overlooking the Calore valley, "The Magic of Christmas" is the festive calendar that accompanies the town from the Immaculate Conception through to Epiphany. A month of events spread across the Sanctuary Square, the Mother Church, and the Community Center: the Pino Irpino tour, the blessing of the bonfires, concerts with bagpipes, meetings with Santa Claus, photography exhibitions, and the tombola awaiting the Befana. A community-focused Christmas, promoted by the municipal administration together with the Parish, the Misericordia Confraternity, and the local Pro Loco.

The Magic of Christmas: the festive calendar of San Mango sul Calore

For several years, the Municipality of San Mango sul Calore has gathered all the festive period events under the title "The Magic of Christmas". It is not a large-scale spectacular event, but rather a series of evenings, concerts, conferences, and children's parties spread over a month, designed for those who live in the village year-round and those who return specifically for the holidays. It is the way a village of just over a thousand inhabitants in Irpinia tells its story and reconnects.

From the Immaculate Conception to Epiphany

The calendar follows the rhythm of Irpinian popular devotion. It opens during the days of the Immaculate Conception with the Pino Irpino stop in the Sanctuary Square, organized by the Pro Loco Sanmanghese, and with the blessing of the bonfires, one of the most deep-rooted rituals of the Campanian Apennines: the fires lit in the village squares mark the entry into the Christmas season and recall a tradition that has never been interrupted here. From there, the events continue until the Epiphany tombola, which concludes the calendar on January 5th.

Sacred music, bagpipes, and tradition

The Mother Church is the second heart of the festival. It hosts Christmas period concerts, ranging from performances by musical talents raised in the village to bagpipe groups that perform traditional novenas and carols. In Irpinia, the sound of the bagpipe and the ciaramella has accompanied the Christmas novena for centuries, brought from house to house by shepherds descending from the mountains: hearing it again under the vaults of the church, or through the streets of the village, is the most defining part of the entire program.

Children, schools, and families

A significant part of the calendar is dedicated to the little ones. Santa Claus meets school students, the Community Center hosts afternoons of entertainment, music, and games, and screenings for children and teenagers are organized, along with the traditional "waiting for the Befana" tombola. These are simple, free, and well-attended moments that hold a specific value in the villages of inland Irpinia: keeping together a community that empties out during the winter.

A community-built event

"The Magic of Christmas" is promoted by the Municipal Administration of San Mango sul Calore with the collaboration of the Santa Maria degli Angeli Parish (and Santa Margherita di Scozia), the Misericordia Confraternity, and the Pro Loco Sanmanghese. The latter handles a large part of the cultural initiatives, from conferences on local devotion to photography exhibitions dedicated to the village's memory.

San Mango sul Calore, a village in Irpinia

With just over a thousand inhabitants at about 470 meters above sea level, in the Province of Avellino, in Campania: San Mango sul Calore overlooks the valley of the river that completes its name. The town grew in the Middle Ages around a chapel dedicated to Saint Magnus, from which the toponym derives. The village is known above all for the San Mango fig, for the red chestnut, and for the vineyards that fall within the Taurasi area; the patron saint is Saint Theodore the Martyr.

What to expect

Those arriving in San Mango sul Calore during the Christmas period will not find large markets or scenic displays, but a living village: lights shining on the narrow streets, the church full for concerts, and the Community Center filling up with families. It is a local-style Christmas, suitable for those visiting Irpinia in search of the authentic dimension of Apennine villages rather than a postcard event. The events are generally free to enter and are concentrated in the late afternoon and evening.

The Magic of Christmas — edition 2026

The 2025-2026 edition of "The Magic of Christmas" brought San Mango sul Calore to life from December 6, 2025, to January 5, 2026, with nine events. It opened with the Pino Irpino stop in the Sanctuary Square and the blessing of the bonfires, continued with a conference on the cult of the Immaculate Conception, concerts in the Mother Church, and the bagpipes of Daltrocanto & Musicamore, and closed with the photography exhibition "San Mango in black and white" and the "waiting for the Befana" tombola.

The 2025-2026 calendar promoted by the Municipal Administration of San Mango sul Calore distributed nine events over exactly one month, from December 6, 2025, to January 5, 2026, alternating traditional rites, music, and cultural initiatives.

The start was entrusted to the days of the Immaculate Conception: Saturday, December 6, the Pino Irpino stop in the Sanctuary Square, organized by the Pro Loco Sanmanghese, and Sunday, December 7, the blessing of the bonfires. On December 8, the Community Center hosted the conference "The cult of the Immaculate Conception," also organized by the Pro Loco.

The musical part was concentrated in the Mother Church, with the concert on December 14 dedicated to "an Irpinian talent... an excellence of San Mango sul Calore" and, on December 30, the evening "following the Comet Star" with the bagpipes of Daltrocanto & Musicamore.

For the little ones, on December 19, Santa Claus met school students, and on December 21, the Community Center hosted a party with entertainment, music, and games organized by the Municipal Administration. The closing, during the Epiphany days, featured the photography exhibition "San Mango in black and white" (January 3) and the "waiting for the Befana" tombola (January 5).
