Over two months of lights, music, theatre, and nativity scenes under the porticoes of the Metellian town
«The Dream and the Light» is not just a single event, but the cultural project through which the Municipality of Cava de' Tirreni, in the province of Salerno, Campania, fills the entire Christmas season with appointments. The program kicks off in early December and runs until mid-February: more than two months where music, theatre, visual arts, literature, and folk traditions are spread across the churches, theatres, monumental complexes, schools, and squares of the Metellian town. It is a deliberate choice: instead of concentrating everything into one weekend, the administration has built a long calendar capable of accompanying the locals from the Immaculate Conception through to the heart of winter.
The symbolic moment is December 8th in Piazza Duomo, with the lighting of the tree and the illuminations: a spectacle of pure lights, colors, and luminous fountains, without fireworks, accompanied by Santa Claus, elves, and Disney characters. At the same time, street bands parade along Corso Umberto I under the famous porticoes, while in the foyer of the «Luca Barba» Municipal Theatre, Santa's House opens, animated every evening by elves and costumed performers until early January.
The musical aspect is perhaps the richest. The churches of Cava — San Francesco and Sant'Antonio, Sant'Anna, San Nicola di Bari in Pregiato, the Basilica of the Madonna dell'Olmo, the Cathedral, and the Purgatorio Archconfraternity — host choral and symphonic concerts entrusted to local ensembles such as the Metelliana Polyphonic Choir, the Montecastello Popular Choir, and the «Angelicus» Orchestra and Polyphonic Choir. At the «Luca Barba» Municipal Theatre, prose, musicals, and family shows alternate, ranging from Neapolitan tradition classics to swing concerts.
The nativity scene remains the common thread of the Campanian tradition, and in Cava, it takes many forms:
On January 5th, the city experiences its most crowded event: the White Night, which coincides with the first day of the winter sales and transforms the center into a long promenade among open shops, DJ sets, and outdoor stages. It is a twenty-year-old tradition that, in recent years, has brought top names of Italian pop music to Cava. The following day, January 6th, is dedicated to children with the «Kingdom of the Befana and the Coal Elves» in Piazza Duomo.
Cava de' Tirreni is known for its medieval porticoes, the Benedictine Abbey of the Most Holy Trinity, and an ancient commercial vocation that makes it the natural meeting point between the Nocera-Sarno area, the Metellian Valley, and the Amalfi Coast. The Christmas project plays precisely on this identity: street performances cross the main street, parades involve local merchants, and local schools stage their own concerts and living nativity scenes. There is no lack of civic memory, with events dedicated to Mamma Lucia, the local figure who buried the bodies of fallen soldiers after the war, and book presentations curated by local associations.
The best period is undoubtedly between December 8th and January 6th, when the illuminations are lit every evening and the calendar is at its busiest. Those looking for a more intimate atmosphere can take advantage of the weeks in January and February, dedicated primarily to theatre, exhibitions, and chamber music. Most events have free admission: it is a Christmas designed for families, children, and those who want to discover a lively Campanian town even outside the tourist season.
Approved by the Municipal Council on December 4, 2025, and presented a few days later by Mayor Vincenzo Servalli and the Councilor for Culture Armando Lamberti, the 6th edition program covered over two months of events, from December 6, 2025, to February 14, 2026, with a budget of 60,000 euros split between the 2025 and 2026 budgets.
The project, Lamberti explained, «combines tradition and innovation, memory and creativity», acting as a cultural and community hub spread throughout the Metellian town. The events involved city churches, the «Luca Barba» Municipal Theatre, the San Giovanni al Borgo Monumental Complex, the Town Hall, Corso Umberto I, and Piazza Duomo, as well as the local hamlets and schools.
The lighting of the tree and illuminations on December 8th in Piazza Duomo kicked off the most intense part of the calendar. Among the most attended moments were the December 25th flashmob along Corso Umberto I on the theme «Don't look the other way», which turned the historic center into a collective embrace dedicated to peace, and the White Night on January 5th, now in its twenty-first edition, featuring a concert by The Kolors in Piazza Amabile.
Alongside the square events, a continuous theatrical and musical program took place: the three-day festival dedicated to Cava-born director Elvira Coda Notari, the first female director of Italian cinema, great symphonic and choral concerts in churches, nativity and sacred art exhibitions, and the ceremony of the 1st National Prize for Classical Dramaturgy «Benedetto Marzullo» in the Town Hall Council Chamber, which closed the project.
The calendar distributed by the Municipality was indicated as non-definitive and was subject to changes, additions, and variations. The city program was accompanied by Christmas events promoted by the Balzico-Giovanni XXIII, S. Lucia, Don Bosco, S. Nicola, and Carducci-Trezza comprehensive institutes.
Events are spread throughout Cava de' Tirreni (84013), in the province of Salerno: Piazza Duomo, Corso Umberto I, «Luca Barba» Municipal Theatre, San Giovanni Battista al Borgo Monumental Complex, Convent and Church of San Francesco and Sant'Antonio, Cathedral, Town Hall, and the churches of the hamlets.
The project is promoted and funded by the Municipality of Cava de' Tirreni, and most events have free admission. For some theatrical performances, reservations may be required: it is advisable to check the official municipal channels from time to time.
