About Angel's Race

On Easter morning, the historic center of Forio d'Ischia relives a centuries-old tradition: the Angel's Race, a sacred pageant that stages the encounter between the Madonna and the Risen Christ. Preserved by the Archconfraternity of Santa Maria Visitapoveri since the 17th century, the ceremony features four wooden statues carried on shoulders along the Corso, while the Angel runs back and forth to announce the Resurrection amidst ringing bells and a shower of petals. An identity-defining ritual that draws locals and visitors every year.

An Easter tradition rooted in the 17th century

The Angel's Race is one of the most deeply felt religious and popular events in Forio d'Ischia, in the Metropolitan City of Naples, Campania. Every Easter Sunday morning, the town's historic center transforms into the stage for a sacred pageant that depicts the meeting between the Madonna and her Risen Son. The tradition has its roots in the spiritual climate of the Catholic Reformation and has been documented since the 1600s, when popular piety was expressed through representations of the Nativity, the Passion, and the Resurrection.

The four statues and the Archconfraternity

At the heart of the ceremony are four wooden statues: the Madonna, the Risen Christ, Saint John the Apostle, and the Angel. The first three were carved between 1756 and 1757 by a Neapolitan craftsman, while the Angel is the work of Vincenzo Mollica, adorned in gold. The custody and carrying of the statues are the responsibility of the Archconfraternity of Santa Maria Visitapoveri, based in the church of the same name in Piazza Municipio. The right to carry the statues on one's shoulders is passed down from father to son, according to an unwritten custom that has belonged to the same Forio families for generations.

The ritual of the race

On Easter morning, the statues of the Madonna, with her head veiled, and Saint John are placed along the Corso, while the Angel and the Risen Christ set out from the church of Visitapoveri, followed by the confreres and the faithful. The Angel makes three successive runs between the Madonna and Christ to announce the Resurrection. During the final run, the veil is removed from the Virgin's face: the crowd erupts in joy, bells ring out, and a shower of petals and confetti rains down on the Corso. The ceremony concludes with the Angel singing the Regina Coeli and the symbolic gesture of the banner, which is lowered and raised three times without the feathers touching the ground.

A symbol of local identity

More than just a religious event, the Angel's Race is an identity-defining ritual that unites the community of Forio. The historical competition between families for the right to carry the statues testifies to how deeply this tradition is rooted in the town's social fabric. Participation is free and attracts residents, emigrants returning for the occasion, and tourists who choose the island of Ischia to experience an Easter of profound spiritual and anthropological value.

Forio and the Easter of Ischia

The event is part of the broader calendar of the Ischian Holy Week, which features similar rites in other municipalities on the island. In Forio, a village of Saracen towers and churches overlooking the sea, the Angel's Race represents the culmination of Easter celebrations and one of the best opportunities to discover the historic center and its traditions.
